Calculating Infinity / Solving Scenarios / Bedding Down in the Desert

I'm half asleep right now. But that also means I'm half awake. Let floweth thyne words, right?

So what comes next is my response to the comments received in my previous blog entry. My original stated dilemma had much to do with my future choosing, specifically, answering the following question: where shall I be living on April 1st?

If you choose not to read any further, please allow me to express my gratitude. Great input! Thank you all!

Hashing Out Options / Making Decisions -

Off-grid

For several reasons, moving up to Payson, Arizona is now off the table. I am just too unwell. If this was last October or even back in June, moving up into the mountainous terrain would be the most advantageous temporary solution.

But now, with a pronounced difficulty maintaining my weight, while suffering through daily bouts of gastrointestinal illness, plus, the ever- present pain issues…. well yeah, this option is not going to work.

Care Facility

The nursing home option is a last resort. If I become totally grounded in place, unable to get out of bed at all, then yes, the nursing home might be the way to go.

Also worth considering is that I was so angry and frustrated in the final months before leaving the nursing home (due to the restrictions and lack of sleep). If this is going to end for me, I do not want my final demise to take place there (if I can help it).

Sharing Space

I do not believe I am well enough for assisted living. Mainly, I would not be receiving much help from the limited number of staff (if it came down to that). And I also do not feel like contending with the stress and strain of having a stranger as a roommate (no privacy / consistent sleep), unless I absolutely have to be in that situation.

Baked Alive

It's more than likely I wouldn't be able to survive the summer in the garage environment, unless my tolerance for heat has improved exponentially.

Either way, I'm going to try to tough it out as long as I can in the garage environs, hoping I solve the pain and dieting issues on my own. As you know, based upon your own personal experiences, there's nobody and no entity out there willing to, or in any way, able to help. That's the unfortunate reality of our “illness” existence. If doctors can't solve the equation by running a battery of tests, blame is laid upon the patient. That's right, it's our fault - in effect, psychosomatic.

Upstairs

So if things continue as they are, I'll move upstairs into the condo interior and hope for the best. I guess really, I don't need the freedom to explore, or go outside. Me wanting to do those things is selfish. I've had my year of freedom - my year of roaming around the village, exploring, experiencing real life events. I should simply be grateful after having endured seven years being stuck on a mattress. It's a miracle that I somehow recovered to the extent that I did at the time.

On the Market

My wife and I had a discussion last week, and she agreed to have someone come out to evaluate the property, one of those real estate agencies that makes cash offers.

And if there's an offer made, something reasonable, something within $20,000 of the actual property value, then possibly some progress will be made towards having a more (semi)permanent solution in the coming months.

Additionally, we've discussed potential neighborhoods that would fall into a purchasing price range, and then also, be strategically located.

Money Maker/ Income

One downside right now is that she lost her job three weeks ago. I could provide details regarding this unfortunate event, but I shall spare you the details.

For what it's worth, I am already giving her $500 a month per rent, plus, I've given her $200 each month for utilities. Then also, she's earning additional money as a designated caregiver (for me), compensated monetarily two hours per day. So all is not lost.

Doctoring and Appointments

And then also, if necessary, it's possible that my seeing a doctor or a specialist could still be on the agenda with me living upstairs.

Generally speaking, transport used to charge me between $150 and $300 per trip (hospital/testing/other medical events), depending on the circumstances and exacting details of my itinerary. But now, I'd simply need someone to wheel me down the (difficult to navigate) stairs, in a manual wheelchair. At that point, I could hop in my power wheelchair and take it from there… assuming I'm still strong enough to do so.

So I need to figure out if there's any service that would help me get down the stairs. The wife is strong, works out, lifts weights several days per week, but there'd have to be an additional available person assisting me down the stairs.

Perhaps I could hire someone off of Craigslist - pay them $100 out of pocket (for their efforts).

Strength in Pain

Regarding the pain issues, I found an old prescription of codeine from 2017. So I think that'll somewhat tide me over for a while. Additionally, codeine slows down intestinal peristalsis, so perhaps that's why my diarrhea has diminished over the past two days. So that, in combination with the marijuana, should help.

Also, I've been doing my fair share of abdominal crunches. The idea? Strengthen my core in order to help relieve the internal pressure. So possibly, that is working, too. I've been doing these exercises for the past three weeks now, and the duration of the pain has been much shorter, for the most part. Instead of an hour or two consecutively, I can sometimes relieve the excruciating pain within 10 minutes by undulating properly. Or improperly. Hell, I don't know. The concept makes sense to me.

As an added bonus, smoking an occasional cigarette helps my mental state. It gives me something to look forward to, something that will calm me for a period of time, similar to meditating.

Oh, the other thing I may need to figure out is how to locate a trustworthy local drug dealer. My former band of homeless friends (over on 40th street) could help me in that effort, but I'd have to transport myself over to their neck of the woods. Neck of the desert? Hmmm….

So the idea is to get some Tylenol 3 (the one that has codeine in it) and simply utilize that drug, since codeine doesn't have many side effects or initiate any long-term damage. Based upon what I've read, it's the safest and simplest pain med out there - which is why I started taking it in the first place.

Intake

Lastly, I've been able to ingest approximately 1200 calories each of the past seven days. And that's a victory of sorts.

Joy of Joys

I got outside and into the sunshine for at least 30 minutes for three consecutive days, so that's an accomplishment of sorts. Beyond that, I'm mostly watching episodes of Judge Judy, and Rawhide. Sometimes I'll revisit various incarnations of Star Trek.

Rawhide is actually kind of cool. I never watched it before. One of the stars is Clint Eastwood. He's famous because he made a lot of cowboy movies where he didn't talk much, but he knew how to take care of himself with his Colt 45 or 44 Magnum or some distinguished variety of hand cannon. But the best part of the Rawhide episodes is the black and white cinematography - the high desert scenery, mountains and mesas and valleys and desert shrub and Joshua trees. And the plot is simple: manly men herding cattle, and driving them to market, all across the Great Western Lands. Entertaining stuff. Plus, I'm finding enjoyment learning the lingo.

That'll do it for now. I saw the doctor two days ago, and she's going to try to score me an abdominal MRI. Perhaps something good will come out of that. A diagnosis. Clues. Hope. You know, the usual suspects.

Take care,
Howard

@Rufous McKinney check out the desertscape!
very cool plants!.....

something with yellow flowers looks like a bush poppy....

and that narrow leaved yucca-type plant is cool, you just have seed pods left on stalks. (Lily family)

Got in on a localized heavy thunder storm last night here. That was very fun.

RE: Rawhide.

Loved that show. I'm the classic, older American, who watched far too many westerns while young.

Queue the theme song to Rawhide. I know every word.

But there is something about them, isn't there?

I had my entire Annie Oakley Outfit, altho I do not personally remember uttering her name. Pistolas, no rifles

Tanto told me I was a really cute baby, in 1953 Los Angeles.

Botanizing old westerns is now a major enjoyable pastime on my list of possible diversions.

I still highly recommend the Sci Fi film, Bamboo Saucer, to anyone bored and its not a western, yet its also a western.

Wonder where can I see an episode of Rawhide?

I think Clint Eastwood in Rawhide is not much like the Clint Eastwood tough guy of later fame.

What I remember is he grinned, all the time. That smile of his was entirely contagious and totally charming. And then he stopped smiling for 40 years.

I guess that having too much money weighed down both Clint's pockets and smile! (Well, something along those lines).

Now we have all sci-fi it seems. Yesterday everything revolved around westerns. There is an all western channel for you really big-into-western folks! Don't ask me what its called or how you access it. Perhaps someone else knows. Yours, Lenora

Wonder where can I see an episode of Rawhide?

It's on Pluto TV streaming for free (with commercials) 24 hours a day. They also have a plethora of of other television shows from long ago (and not so long ago): Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Next Generation, The Love Boat, The Andy Griffith Show, Judge Judy, and a host of others; a science channel, news channels, concert performances, etc.

@Rufous McKinney are each of these lantanas?

There's one that seems to be growing from the ground through the rocks in the gravel so and so forth whatever, I don't know anything about plants, but is the one that's barely showing any growth is that also a lantana?

The one that's growing up through the rocks has been dormant for 2 years. Is there some sort of dormancy for lantana's? If it is a lantana. I'm not sure what questions to ask because I am plant stupid! Lol

I'm asking you because you're the plant lady and I have no clue thank you

Hey, @Howard

Hope you are hanging in there as best you can.

Yesterday I needed to look up something medical for my mom and I came across this rare condition, which naturally made me think of you. 😁

If you already know about this or if it doesn't resonate with you, no worries. I just wanted to share before I forget!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK470601/#:~:text=Patients with celiac artery compression, associated with nausea and emesis.

Thanks. And yes, I've read about that condition previously. It's very similar to SMA Syndrome, in some respects - which I think I may have (my symptoms and location line up. The arteries are adjacent to each other.

I appreciate the head's up. I hope you and everybody else here is doing well, or improving, or in the least, keeping their spirits high. :)

Take care,
Howard

Howard, I was wondering if you had considered asking your doc if a combination of drugs - one that treats the Gastroparesis and associated symptoms together with another that treats the diarrhoea - would be a possibility for you? Or is there maybe even a drug that could achieve relief of both simultaneously?

I am on a med used off label for chronic nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea that I've had which developed as a complication of my illness 30 years ago and which has controlled those symptoms pretty effectively for all that time (although symptoms return if I try to discontinue and occasionally have Akathisia in legs as a side effect). Not sure that particular med is suitable for Gastroparesis though but maybe similar meds might be.

Is the move upstairs still on? Bit worried about you with the weather probably starting to heat up there soon and you still (?) in the garage... 🥵

Meanwhile, it's still cold and no sun here 🥶 (ridiculously bad emoji!)....should start to brighten up soon I hope. I bought a home test vitamin D kit this week, pretty sure my levels are at rock bottom again after a very grey and cold UK winter and with a tiny garden that gets no sun at all for four months of the year, and like you I feel a bit better overall with a bit more energy and less constant exhaustion with regular warm sun exposure (as long as I don't get overheated). Might try to save up for a vitamin D lamp but very expensive and nowhere really to store in summer in our tiny house.

Any trips out recently? I always look forward to hearing about them, the people you meet sometimes (when you were at the nursing home especially) and your photos. And always love reading your thoughts on this, that and the other too...

Glad I stopped by to check in. Sorry I missed this botany moment.

I"m still "recovering" from the acute part of the chronic thing. Weeks later.

Those could be Lantana. The one in the pot, for sure is likely so, as flowers are evident.

got rabbits? the top and bottom plants look chewed upon.

Lantanas are in the Verbena family, and therefore have opposite leaves and mint-like qualities, as its next door to mints.

I have several here in my yard. I don't take pictures often.

I went out in the yard, @Howard....hunting lantana......(by the way, a very excellent art film, from Australia, is called Lantana)

The landlord sends somebody over to prune everything and make it all hedgy and flower-less. Also they rake, and whack.

I am significantly reducing this yard manicuring business.

I posting one Lantana, and I thought you might enjoy the leaf, near the flower there, is being sampled by some minute insect/ larvae. Its dining inside the leaf.

That would be ideal, right?

I tried Reglan a while back, for the gastroparesis, but the side effects were immediate. Apparently, that medication crosses the blood brain barrier, and as a result, I experienced difficulty speaking clearly... among other lesser side effects.

I seem to be having some luck ingesting banana flakes - helping to resolve the diarrhea - at least it works some days.

I'm glad at least, that you found a solution for your issues (in that regard).

Is the move upstairs still on? Bit worried about you with the weather probably starting to heat up there soon and you still (?) in the garage...

We've had a few days in mid to upper 80's, but mostly, we've been hit with a series of storms, keeping the temps seasonably cool.

Tomorrow we're supposed to have gusting winds between 40 and 50 mph, before another cold front passes through. Rain, and temperatures in the 60's is next on the agenda - well below normal. HOORAY!!!

I've arranged for someone to help bring me upstairs, once the heat becomes unmanageable.

Might try to save up for a vitamin D lamp but very expensive

Right, the UVB lamp was tremendously helpful to me - brought me up from Super Awful Severe Near Death status, to a more manageable Severe / Simply Bedridden status. I am quite convinced that I have Vitamin D Resistance, which I attribute to my Celiac Sprue Disease (gluten intolerance / allergy).

Oh, $400 for the lamp. Luckily my big sister made the purchase.

Any trips out recently?

I've been mostly grounded. Too many complications. But I still get out of bed for (on average) an hour a day. I have written about some recent experiences, but haven't been motivated to edit the material. I'm simply bummed out about my current limitations, in comparison to how well I'd been feeling mere months ago.

Perhaps I'll put something out soon. :)
Thanks for checking in.

Right. After finding it buried beneath the gravel, The Wife Person tried to dig up the tiny one, with the original idea to place the potted version there ($25!) - but it has an extensive and impressive root system.

Instead, she's going to hand off the plant to her daughter, and we'll cross our fingers that the tiny tiny Lantana grows.

No rabbits in our neighborhood, access is difficult.

Thanks for the Lantana info.

Ran into the photo of me dressed up in my Annie Oakley outfit, long before anybody around here was born....

Groovy picture. :)

I hope you are feeling improved of late. Being caught in the midst of a downturn sucks.

I was reminded earlier, of this guy who goes on field trips and looks at the plants, @Howard.

He taught himself botany, while incarcerated. When I"m in the mood to be reminded I wandered the earth, once myself- I watch some of his shows and they are really entertaining.

He uses Latin and everything. He also swears. He visits exotic places in nature, but he will also botanize the vacant lot etc.

The plant types are the last to reach the top of the mountain. They are busy, putzing, and looking at details.

I posted a new blog entry, but it's got a million words, so I apologize for that - I just couldn't decide which items to cut (I often write too much, then get overwhelmed trying to cut material, and then never post the darned thing!)

hope everybody is decent :)

I love this picture of you. That and the one you posted once with you in a tuxedo outfit and your little blond daughter standing with you. :)

No that's okay. I'm just glad you decided to do a new blog post because I was starting to have a hard time finding this one. :)
