This project is getting really exciting. Thanks to all who have been involved for their hard work.

An idea for a location site: Times Square in NYC. I don't know whether space would be available to display a long garland, but perhaps short garlands could be prepared to be held in Times Square during the hours for the morning shows--GMA, Today, and The Early Show. Even the short garlands should be eye-catching and might be picked up on camera.

That would be great! Do they film there every weekday morning or just sometimes or what? I wonder who I could send the press release to, and try to set up a date to have them ask a question or two on camera instead of it just being socks waving in the background. Hmmm.

Pepsi is on my to-do list but I must make myself step away from socks for the rest of today. I've gotten pretty much nothin' else done. Back soon, though!

I watch GMA almost daily. Sam Champion is usually with the onlookers for a few minutes and often comments on posters or something that stands out. I think he might ask a question or two about the project. I'm not sure they schedule those things in advance. It seems pretty spontaneous. It would be important to be there early to get in the first row closest to Sam and the cameras.

I finally got our CafePress web store up and running. I'll be adding a few more things over the next day or 2, but we've got buttons and t shirts and coffee cups all ready :D

The Sock Shoppe

And thanks everyone for all the awesome PR ideas!

Aw thanks gracenote. :Retro redface: And my apologies to everyone about being incommunicado about the project (and just about everything else) for the last few. I've kind of got my head down working on the physical groundwork/mechanics of the project and am likely to be so until official launch.

I'm not so sure. The song is SO familiar, and strong, and often played, that I think it might overpower our little socks display. I think something that makes people need to slow down to listen and to view the socks would be best. Sorry, no ideas.

Somebody who is not a native speaker of English asked me in a pm, what does "sock it to me" mean? I hadn't realized that it wouldn't be common enough to be familiar to most English speakers (even as a second language). It is a very common idiomatic expression.

To "sock" can mean to hit, as with fists. So if you socked it to M. E. you would be striking a blow against the disease. Etymology Online tells us:
sock (v.) 1700, "to beat, hit," of uncertain origin. To sock it to (someone) first recorded 1877.

But "sock it to me" is familiar to many people from the song RESPECT (written by Otis Redding but made wildly popular by Aretha Franklin) which has the refrain,
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me;
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB
sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me...

Here, TCB = Take Care of Business, and "sock it to me" has the meaning, "lay it on me," "give it to me straight," or, in plainest English, either "tell me" or "let me have it." So Aretha was singing, "Take care of business, and let me have my proper respect." Appropriate sentiments to our illness, I think many would agree.

The popular1960s US TV show, "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," played with these alternate meanings---"tell me" or "hit me," as a running gag.

I'm glad I was asked. I'll post this on page 1 so anyone else who is wondering will know.

Okay, cool! Sounds like next steps on this (while we're simultaneously getting some actual socks together) would be to find someone in NYC who's able to be there in Times Square, possibly on more than one morning, preferably just before or on May 12?

Songs

I love RESPECT and have to say, when I think "Sock It To Me," I already hear that song---and based on a google, so do a lot of people.

It's not necessarily a bad thing for a song to be familiar, especially if it's popular. A Nat King Cole hit decades old can become inextricably associated with donuts.

That said, it would be nice to have a song all our own.

I've only a couple of times in my life come up with original tunes. But what I am good at is filking. That's an I and then an L, okay? F-I-L-K-I-N-G is where you rob tunes, often familiar folk tunes, and make them into your own new song. I do it all the time. Drives my kids crazy.

So, here's what I filked together for us. Not the same as having a song ALL our own, but a familiar tune makes it easy for everyone to sing along.

I Got Socks

I got socks, you got socks. All sick people got socks.
When we got the chills we just put on our socks
And we look out the window at people, people, people:
Everybody looking out the window so lonely for people, people,
And we look out the window at people.
I got a robe, you got a robe. All sick people got robes.
When we can’t get dressed we wrap up in our robes
And we lie down and dream about people, people, people:
Everybody looking out the window so lonely for people, people,
And we lie down and dream about people.
I got a heart, you got a heart. All sick people got hearts. Still beating.
When we get lonely we look in our hearts and we know we’ve still got people, people.
And we know we’ve still got people.
Everybody looking out the window so lonely for people, people,
And we know we've still got our people.
I got shoes, you got shoes, doesn’t everybody wear shoes? When I get well I’m gonna put on my shoes: I'm gonna dance! DANCE! Everybody looking out the window so lonely for people, people, going to get out of bed, going to put on some clothes, going to walk out the door, gonna dance with all of my people.

I Got Shoes (Johnny Cash version):

I got shoes you got shoes all God's children got shoes
When I get to heaven gonna put on my shoes
I'm gonna walk all over God's heaven heaven
Everybody talkin' bout heaven ain't goin' there heaven heaven
Gonna walk all over God's heaven
I got a robe, you got a robe all God's children got a robe
When I get to heaven gonna put on my robe
I'm gonna shout all over God's heaven heaven
Everybody talkin' bout heaven ain't goin' there heaven heaven
Gonna shout all over God's heaven
I got a harp, you got a harp all of God's children got a harp. Oh Glory
When I get to heaven gonna play on my harp
I'm gonna play all over God's heaven heaven
Everybody talkin' bout heaven ain't goin' there heaven heaven
Gonna play all over God's heaven
I got wings, you get wings, all got children got wings, when I get to heaven gonna put on my wings I'm gonna fly! FLY! Everybody talkin' bout heaven ain't going there heaven, heaven, going to fly all over, going to shout all over going play all over gonna walk all over god's heaven

We can have more than one or two songs. We can have a whole damn songbook.

Just added on page 1, a "next steps" post (post #6 of this thread). I'll update it; please let me know if there's anything I should add!

Next Steps
Can you do some of these?

socks

Dream up what a sock would look like, that represents you. What images, activities, symbols represent you?
Make your own sock OR request a "sock blank" and decorate it OR request that a volunteer decorate one for you.
Send it in with a completed Sock Submission form (found on the website).

links
Check out the website.
Join the Facebook group.
Send links to both of those to friends, family, colleagues, your doctors maybe?

knit, sew, decorate
Make and/or decorate socks for others.
Knit tiny doll-size socks (pattern will be provided) to make into lapel pins.

help wanted: publicity help, media emails!
Does anyone have email addresses for major media outlets (tv networks, news services, etc)? We need valid emails and contact names to send the Press Release to.

help wanted: morning TV personalities
We need someone(s) able to stand around in the morning chill in Times Square holding up a small garland of socks with a banner, to try to get on one of the big network morning TV shows. They must be willing to catch the attention of program hosts and answer questions about the project and the disease.

help wanted: location scouts

Research locations, find out who handles permits for displays and/or assemblies there, find out if there's a permit fee and what paperwork needs to be done.

ok, I e-mailed the Chamber of Commerce director of Fort Payne, AL . Don't worry, I didn't jump ahead. I just referred her to the current Web site. I told her I thought she ought to know about it, since Fort Payne is largest sock making city in US. I told her I was not making a formal request, since it is too soon. But I asked her if she had any ideas of how Fort Payne Chamber, city or area businesses might be involved.

I got a response saying she read the Web site. She asked if this is the same illness as fibromyalgia. So I educated her on the difference. She thanked me and said she would be alert to news about the illness from now on. Also, she suggested a local company that might be interested in helping, possibly with sponsorship. She suggested possibly Cooper Hosiery might be interested. Problem is, seems they don't have a Web site. I think it is likely a wholesale company, likely manufacturing for many brand names. I did see they own private jets. (Surely they can give some money for our little campaign.) A lot of times, brand companies will use more than one manufacturers. They make socks, tights, stockings, pantyhose, fabrics, leather production, fivers and textiles, thread and yarn processing, slacks and trousers and shorts, shirts and blouses, sweaters, coats and jackets, suits dresses and skirts and saris and kimonos and overalls and coveralls.

Maybe we need to get the brand name company and not the manufacturer. The manufacturer likely won't care if they get public exposure. But Jockey, and Haynes might. But this company might be able to get us inside contacts at these other companies.

I hope y'all don't mind since I was not speaking for this effort. I just passed on what is already on the Web site, publicly available already. And it gave me a chance to educate at least one person about our illness.

When you get a list of benefits and requests for sponsors, and if you want me to contact these companies in Fort Payne or the city, I will be glad to do so, if I am up to it. Today I am. But who knows about tomorrow or next week. (side note, I saw the Dekalb County newspaper, Times-Journal, covering Fort Payne, reporting on youth basketball games. The names of the teams were: F.P. Foortworks, Western Sizzlin, Cooper Hosiery, Times-Journal, D.M. Construction, Edward Jones. LCR Real Estate, First Federal Bank, Burger King and Crossroads Hosiery. I have heard of sports facilities named after companies, but not little league basketball teams. But I guess it is all about branding and name recognition. "Here comes Johnny Smith for Burger King dribbling down the court. Oh look, Brad Jones, number 6 for Cooper Hosiery, steals the ball.")

Anyone thought of trying to get Dr. Donnica to help us. We might have to pay her. Medical PR is what she does for a living. But she has connections and might get us more national media exposure.

Also, folks, can we print up a flier or something to put in doctor's offices to get patients who don't spend hours every day on these message boards? Maybe put them in offices of many CFs specialists, of course the ones we love. (And why not include the ones we don't?) I don't want to end up with only 50 socks.

Be careful, we might need to see if we can use that song without paying for it. There are rights, you know. Royalties.

I don't know if that would be the case for this song, but we will need to find out.

Here's a thought

Here's a though, why not use the "Respect" song but have someone do it in a slower version. Slow down the tempo. Why not ask our comrade the jazz singer with CFS.

Wonderful Tina! You're perking up a lot of excellent ideas. Meantime I've been having a slow day and have to go to town on top of it. I'll try to conserve some brain power and see if I can get the potential sponsor list and sponsor benefits together over the weekend. It sure would help us do more stuff, if we had a little money to spend.

We have a jazz singer? Ooooh!

I'm sure using Respect in any official way would require arranging for rights. I Got Shoes, (or "I Got Socks"... doesn't anyone like my filk?) on the other hand must be public domain, I think, but it couldn't hurt to research.

Today's updates:

I've gotten the press release out to people within the ME/CFS community, but could really use some help finding media contacts' emails to get it out to the actual Press.

Meanwhile talkingfox is coming along great with the behind the scenes stuff and her hubby the webmeister has the site looking good, pretty much ready for visitors.

We're continuing to put out the call for volunteers to knit, sew, do PR, scout locations, create events, etc. etc.

I'll be away most of today, but keep on posting ideas and questions, everyone. Thanks!

media contact:

These are mostly freelance journalists in Alabama. Includes a few authors and bloggers. I am a member: http://alabamamediaprofessionals.com/

This is the state organization for newspapers. They may have a contact list for press releases. I was a member until this year: http://www.alabamapress.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=apa

This is the broadcasters association in the state: http://www.al-ba.com/

If you want me to find the same organizations for other states, I will. You will need to contact the organization to get the contact list from them. And, it occurred to me, they may charge for it. Although it would take longer, you could go to these Web sites and find contact info for each individual member, meaning you will have to send e-mail or contact each one individually.

Usually, broadcast press releases are not effective unless it has one or more of the following elements:

conflict over issue that affects local people
local event
something new that affects local people
a change that affects local people

You may see a theme here: local. Reporters are more interested if there is a local angle. And stories like these, they like to have a face. Maybe we could get a list of patients who are willing to be interviewed by news media, thus when a news media is interested, they can be directed to local person to tell the story.

Also, press release is not enough, phone calls are needed too.

I am in contact with a Birmingham News reporter, not concerning the sock campaign. I saw he did a story on a big wheel in infectious disease here in Birmingham. So I e-mailed the reporter telling him there is recent news about chronic fatigue syndrome possible link to virus. Did he want me to send him info. He said yes. He said he has a friend who has CFS and that friend has been watching the XMRV news also. So e-mail directly to reporters may work. If we can find out which reporter covers health at all these different news outlets.

I might can help with that.

Tina
