The collection of references at Bare Feet in Medicine is quite extensive. The book, Take Off Your Shoes and Walk by Simon J. Wikler is particularly good. In this book, podiatrist Dr. Wikler advocated going barefoot for better foot health (especially for children). He also explained how shoes often deform and distort our feet. Children with the healthiest and most supple feet are those who habitually go barefoot, according to Dr. Lynn T. Staheli and a growing number of other pediatric orthopedists. His studies of developing nations show that non-shoe-wearers have better flexibility and mobility, stronger feet, fewer deformities, and less complaints than those who wear shoes regularly. He says that, when a child must wear a shoe, it should be lightweight, flexible, shaped more or less quadrangularly, and above all, should not have the arch supports and stiff sides once deemed necessary to give the foot support. Many pediatric orthopedists strongly oppose "corrective" or "orthopedic" shoes for straightening foot and leg deformities like flat feet, pigeon toes, knock-knees, or bowlegs. Dr. Staheli and others contend that there is no evidence that corrective shoes correct anything, and that most of the supposed deformities correct themselves in almost all cases. What every kid seems to know instinctively -- that going barefoot is good for you -- has been confirmed by an orthopedist and rehabilitation specialist who has studied foot problems in various parts of the world.
"A high proportion of the world's population walks barefoot most of the time, and the average person who walks barefoot has much healthier feet than the average person who wears shoes, says Dr. Paul W. Brand, chief of the rehabilitation branch of the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, Carville, La. and professor of surgery a Louisiana State University Medical School.
Dr. Brand conducted an orthopedic clinic in India for 18 years and has also treated orthopedic problems in Ethiopia and the United Kingdom. On the basis of these experiences he suggests that maybe we in America should walk barefoot for at least part of each day.
Common foot problems in the United States include corns, bunions, hammer toes, athlete's foot and ingrown toenail - but none of these is a problem in countries in which most people go barefoot.
"Every one is a product of footwear. They are caused either by poorly designed or poorly fitted shoes, or in such conditions as athlete's foot, by the simple fact of wearing shoes that prevent free access of air between the toes," he says.
Shoe-wearers also receive mechanical stress from walking on the same part of the foot with each step, while the rough, uneven thrust of the ground is transmitted to a different part of the barefoot walker's foot with each step.
In shoes, Dr. Brand says, sensitivity, mobility, and intrinsic muscle strength of the feet are lost.
" The barefoot walker receives a continuous stream of information about the ground and about his own relationship to it, while a shod foot sleeps inside an unchanging environment. Sensations that are not used or listened to become decayed and atrophy. There is a sense of aliveness and joy which I experience walking barefoot that I never get in shoes," he says.
Such direct contact with the ground has a great deal to do with preventing fractures of the ankle from "turning the foot over" by stepping on a rock or edge of the pavement. In India Dr. Brand saw no ankle fractures except in those who wore shoes.
The reason for this, he says, is that a barefoot person has instant information about the situation relayed by the touch-sensitive nerves in the skin of the sole and gets the information in time to avoid putting his weight on the unstable foot.
The person wearing shoes may not get this information in time to remove his weight from the leg to prevent a fracture.
In the Olympic Games, Indian and Pakistani teams have won several gold medals in field hockey while playing barefoot, and have had an impressive injury-free record. They have now turned to shoes in international competition but only in self-defense against players who wear boots with cleats and studs, Dr. Brand notes.
Going barefoot seems to have an additional advantage in preventing arthritis of the hip. For persons of comparable age, this is seen more frequently in Westerners and Indians who wear shoes than in the barefoot population.

Care For Kids Then Care For Their Feet

"[Children's] bones are soft cartilage, easily compressible, and they don't feel pain until the damage is done," said the president. The comment was made on the need for parents to be aware of the damage that is being done by children wearing shoes. The Australian Podiatry Association provides a free community service in an effort to create greater awareness of the need to safeguard children's feet.
30% of the children checked in the associations survey (2,500 children) in an eastern Australian state were found to be wearing footwear inadequate for day long use.
"The effects of childhood foot damage can show up in posture and gait in the early twenties," the president said. "The inability for a person to stand for any length of time without stress can also be attributed to early foot problems. Shoes must take a lot of the blame for claw toes, under and over riding toes, bunions and ingrown toe nails, not to mention corns and callus'."
"Australian children probably have broader feet now than they did ten years ago, because so many go barefoot. Between the ages of 7 and 12 years, growth is fairly rapid. Don't hesitate to let them be barefoot. It won't spread or flatten normal healthy feet as the foot only grows as long as the ligaments allow anyway. The majority of foot damage is preventable if parents take proper care of their children's feet by allowing them to grow naturally - barefootedly."
Say OK to Bare Feet
Recent research has shown that children are more likely to have good posture if they go without shoes as often as is possible and safe, according to Janet Perry, M.P.T., a physical therapist with Rehabilitation Network in Portland, Oregon. "That way they get more 'sensory information' from their feet and will have better walking and postural skills." Children should be allowed to go shoeless ... in places where it's safe to walk barefoot as a way to improve their posture, according to Perry.

Style and price are not nearly as important as fit when it comes to choosing a good children's shoe. In fact, the best shoe for a child is often no shoe at all, according to Dr. Carol Frey, associate clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery in Manhattan Beach, Calif.. "We are no different from any other animal. We don't need shoes for proper foot development," explains Frey. Walking is a collaborative effort requiring constant communication between the brain and feet. Nerve endings on the bottom of the feet sense the ground beneath and send signals to the brain that help it determine how and where weight should be distributed with each new step. Shoes alter that feedback to the brain. The thicker the sole, the more muffled the message. "Children are forced to walk with their feet further apart to keep their balance," Frey says.
Frey has just compiled a list of shoe-buying tips for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. "Shoes are not necessary for support or development of the arch, they only protect the feet from the environment," said Fry, who routinely treats foot deformities caused by ill-fitting shoes. Babies and crawlers need only wear socks or booties to keep their feet warm, she said. Toddlers, too, should be allowed to go sans shoes whenever they are in a protected environment. Going barefoot helps children develop stronger and more coordinated foot muscles, Frey explained. Studies also show that barefoot children learn to walk more quickly and have fewer falls.
Besides growing up around man-eating lions, theres a good reason Kenyans have won the last 10 consecutive Boston Marathons: They rarely wear shoes. This makes their feet extremely strong and far less susceptible to disorders such as fallen arches, says Dr. Frey.

"The Influence of Footwear on the Prevalence of Flat Foot"

Abstract: We analyzed the static footprints of 2300 children between the ages of four and 13 years old to establish the influence of footwear on the prevalence of flat foot. The incidence among children who used footwear was 8.6% compared with 2.8% in those who did not (p < 0.001). Significant differences between the predominance in shod and unshod children were noted in all age groups, most marked in those with generalized ligament laxity. Flat foot was most common in children who wore closed-toe shoes, less common in those who wore sandals or slippers, and least in the unshod.
Our findings suggest that shoe-wearing in early childhood is detrimental to the development of a normal longitudinal arch.
In Europe and America flat foot is a common reason for attendance at a children's orthopaedic clinic, but in India children are seldom brought for treatment for flat foot. The few children who do attend with this complaint are from affluent urban families and they all wear shoes. In our clinic we have never seen a child from the farming community or from the family of a manual labourer who complained of flat foot.
The high concentration of flat foot among six-year-old children who wore shoes as compared with those who did not, implies that the critical age for development of the arch is before six years.
Our cross-sectional study suggests that shoe-wearing in early childhood is detrimental to the development of a normal or a high medial longitudinal arch. The susceptibility for flat foot among children who wear shoes is most evident if there is associated ligament laxity. We suggest that children should be encouraged to play unshod and that slippers and sandals are less harmful than closed-toe shoes.
...... This study also mentioned that the slipper and sandal-wearing children tended to play barefoot (since this footwear is more easily removed) and that this was believed to account for the intermediate flatfoot incidence rate.

125. Several years ago (after about three decades of on and off shod running programs on man-made surfaces) I decided enough is enough. I was fed up with sore feet, with the pressure points in my athletic shoes, with sore joints, with the stinky shoes, with the lack of air to my feet, and with the hard-surfaced, boring asphalt paths. I switched to walking barefoot on grass. I also supplemented my new barefoot walking program with a regular (but less frequent) barefoot hiking program using wooded-area nature trails. The results of this change from shod to barefoot were 100 percent improvements in every way. No more hot, sore feet, no more sore joints, no more damp, sweaty socks, no more stinky shoes, and no more boring asphalt. With every walk now I get the stimulating, invigorating sensation on my feet from a living carpet of grass and from the massaging effect of the earth. I also get fresh air on my feet and the benefit of Vitamin-D producing sunshine when the sun is out. I walk farther than even my best shod-walking days and every bit as fast, even as fast as I was in college. Once the skills are learned (and assuming all the safety guidelines are followed), it is very safe. Injuries have been very minor and rare (mostly an occasional splinter or minor cut), and have decreased as I became more skilled. Well my chinese TCM doctor always tells me to wear slippers etc. Also my qigong teacher said I should do qigong wearing shoes and not bare feet to stop bad energy. It seems to be a general TCM thing. My only personal explanation is that it is cold in China.
I received an early Christmas present on Dec. 15 in the form of some Earthing products I had ordered, but was not expecting to receive until next year. I just noticed they've extended their special offer until January 2, in case anybody might be interested. I got the package called the Maxi Kit #2 ($169 plus shipping). The two main products I received were:
1) A sheet I can sleep on, with a ground wire running outside the house, that “drains” various kinds of EMFs, static electricity, etc. from my body while I sleep; and 2) An approximately 1' x 2' pad that is designed to essentially do the same kind of grounding. It was advertised as a pad you can put your feet on while doing computer work, to negate/ground the EMFs given off by the computer.
Once I received these products, I noticed they said you can also use the foot pad directly underneath your computer, and have it do the same thing. I liked this idea MUCH better than having the EMFs flow through my body FIRST, and then be grounded.
The very first day I used the computer pad, I noticed a huge difference in my experience of being on my laptop. Normally, I begin to feel nauseous either right away, or within a relatively short time period of starting a computer session. I ended up working for a long time that day, and never felt the kind of nausea that I’m so used to experiencing. I also didn’t notice a great deal of enervation I normally experience after a fairly lengthy time at the computer. It was really pretty astounding.
RE: the earthing sheet. I noticed within the first 48-72 hours, that my normally chronic headaches became fairly significantly worse. But since this can happen for no apparent reason, I hesitated to attribute it to the sheet. However, after a 2-3 days, I began to sleep better, and then my headaches became less intense, to the point where they became less intense than normal. This has been the case now for at least the past week, so I anticipate these will be lasting benefits (Oh Happy Day!!!).
So, MUCH better ability to be on the computer, plus much improved headaches, along with improved sleep, especially the amount of time I can sleep at one time. To me these are all huge benefits, but I’ve noticed another one these past couple days or so. I’ve had what I would describe as “minor” bladder symptoms for several years. They would sort of come and go, so it didn’t strike me as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). I came to believe it was some sort of minor interstitial cystitis (IC) that PWCs often experience.
Well, what I’ve noticed is that these symptoms have improved to the point where I'm not really experiencing them at all (at this time anyway). Made me think about all those hours I’ve spent on my laptop, and how the EMFs streaming from it was so close to some pretty delicate anatomy. It would make sense that it could disrupt some of the sensitive lining of the bladder, etc. Anyway, this has all been quite a surprise, and a notable Christmas present for me.
My experiences so far have given me even more insight into just how electro-sensitive I am. So I intend to follow up on this in the coming year, and try to determine how I can protect myself at all times throughout my day.
I've read this entire thread with interest and thought there might be some merit to the theory of earthing. I finally decided to give the sheet a try and got it about the same time you received yours. I'm using the direct ground running the cord through my bedroom window which was easy enough to set up.
I'm not quite sure what to make of it all yet. I feel like I've been experiencing some detoxing effects. Not long after climbing into bed I find myself perspiring and feeling quite thirsty. I've also had a flare in my interstitial cystitis symptoms for the first time in ages although I can't pinpoint what is causing such irritation. Perhaps some kind of yeast die-off? I'm going to tough it out to see if I eventually feel some better.
On the other hand my boyfriend, who has struggled with insomnia since he was just a kid, went out like a light the first night I put the sheet on the bed and has slept well every night since. He falls into a deep sleep even when he just lies down to take a nap. A couple of days ago he made a joke about how he seems to have gone into hibernation and asked if the sheet might have anything to do with how well he has been sleeping.
So it appears that at least one of us is benefiting from being grounded. I'll report back later if I notice any changes in either of our reactions.

Thanks for your feedback. My best guess is that you too experienced some kind of detox reaction. I personally believe my intensified headaches resulted from a detox, which resulted from a lowering of inflammation in my body. It just feels like there's "less pressure" in my body (and brain) and I feel less bloated.
One other factor I considered: I couldn't find any directions on how to wash the sheet, so uncharacteristically, I started to use it before laundering it. So I continue to consider whether there's an element of toxicity outgassing from this sheet. I was wondering if you've laundered your sheet, or whether you've found some laundering instructions.
Frank, thanks for the link the the EMF website. They have some interesting products which I'll definitely be looking over.
I didn't wash it before using, so that might be a consideration. I didn't see any laundering instructions with the sheet, but in the book that came with it I believe it said it can be washed like any sheet. It's well overdue for a cleaning though. I think I'll run it through on the delicate cycle and then hang it to dry. It's nice to have the tester that comes with it to make sure the sheet and cords are all still working properly.
ETA: Just checked and it does have a bit of a polyester type outgassing odor to it. Duh! Into the washer it goes...
Q. Is the Earthing sheet washable? What about care and cleaning?
A. Your sheet may be laundered just as you would wash other bedding, using a gentle wash cycle and a mild detergent. Low-heat drying is recommended. However, NO chlorine bleach or fabric softener should be used. When necessary, use hydrogen peroxide-based non-bleach to remove stains and/or to whiten your sheet.

Just wanted to briefly mention I've been stringing together several days of sleeping better. 6-7 hrs at night used to be about the best I could do, but am now sleeping 8, 9, 9 1/2, even 10 hours at times.
This morning, after sleeping about 9 hours, I had that familiar feeling I used to have so many years ago when I slept better. Just total relaxation, no agitation, etc. This experience has reinforced my belief that the benefits of earthing are cumulative. It just seems to be working really well for me.

A few years ago, a friend of mine with CFS & FM, started using a "pain patch" which I think had some narcotic pain medication. It really worked well for the pain, but she noticed she began to sleep "all the time".
When she mentioned her concerns about her excessive sleeping to her doctor, he told her it was normal for people to sleep a lot after they've been sleep-deprived for many years. He said to give it a few weeks, and she would likely get over it.
About four weeks later, she was back to sleeping more normally. I'm kind of thinking I may be going through a similar experience at this time. Just being able to "lounge" in bed in the morning feels like such a luxury compared to the stressed out, head-achy, body-achy feelings that used to be so prominent. It's not all gone, but it's much better.
I'm always doing a lot of different things, and a lot of different experiments with my body, but I feel pretty confident this improved sleep is a result of the earthing bed sheet and computer pad I've been using.

Reporting in on my first month with the grounding sheet. I've not changed anything in my daily routine -- continue to use the same supplements and drugs I've been on for some time.
At about three weeks in I woke up one morning to find I was pink! Pink face, pink lips, pink gums, pink nail beds. This is highly unusual because I've been deathly pale for as long as I can remember. I don't know what else to attribute this too. I don't think it's allergies. Those will sometimes turn my skin red, but also hot and itchy which it is not. And it certainly isn't from being in the sun, since we see so little sun in Portland this time of year.
Unfortunately this apparent increase in blood flow has not translated into feeling better, and I'm wondering if it's contributing to detoxing symptoms. Initially I had a flare up of my interstitial cystitis. That has since calmed down, but now I'm having some asthma and that wired-but-tired sensation. Sleep has been quite difficult the last few nights. All of these are very old symptoms for me -- things I haven't had difficulty with in years. It's interesting to be cycling through these old symptoms. I'm also still perspiring after getting into bed and have been needing more showers. It really does feel like I'm going through some kind of detox.
My boyfriend continues to sleep well. He's convinced the sheet is helping. We went without it one night while it was in the laundry, and he tossed and turned until he was banished to the guest room.
I'm still not sure what it all means, but I'll take it as a good sign that my coloring is so much better and that my boyfriend's sleep is improved.
I also bought a pair of moccasins figuring they'd been the easiest way to ground when I'm puttering around the yard. Haven't had much chance to use them outside yet since were in the midst of the rainy season, but they sure are comfortable for wearing around the house. Haven't had a pair since I was a kid.
