Completely eliminated my severe anxiety symptoms with three supplements!

Wanted to introduce myself, been reading this thread and the non-anxiety thread.

@Hip that you so much for the information you have provided, I seem to have ALOT of the same issues and have been looking for answers for 10+ years. SEVERE OCD and GAD, mixed in with a really bad dose of Social Phobia (caring 24/7 about public perception and difficult even walking down the street without anxiety). I also seem to share you anxiety psyhosis issue as well.

I believe i possibly may have Chronic Sore Throat / Mood Virus as well reading this and seem to deal with inflammation. SSRI I stop using after a couple weeks as they all give me so bad side effects. However, its interesting, Curcumin never did anything for me. Also, NAC did not as well

Also I wanted to ask, since you had experienced Anxiety/Stress Psychosis, has NAC made you feel anything in terms of anxiety/racing thoughts etc?

I recently discovered that taking N-acetyl cysteine 600 mg daily actually helps prevent some of my mild psychosis symptoms from appearing. So I've been taking NAC every day in recent months.

is it ok to take Probiotic/Insulin/Saccharomyces boulardii all together?

I've often taken these all together.

really bad dose of Social Phobia

Have you looked into choline bitartrate as a treatment for social phobia? I found this highly effective: I don't have social phobia at present, but a few years ago I developed worries about whether my comments during social interaction might have offended or upset someone. I would worry about this for hours after social activity. But just one 600 mg tablet of choline bitartrate would eliminate these worries within an hour.

Do you think i could get away with this type of tummeric?

That is curcumin, not turmeric. I found turmeric has good anti-anxiety effects, but much less so curcumin. So you don't want to confuse the two. You can often buy turmeric very cheaply by the kilogram in Asian shops as a cooking spice.

I have not tried Choline birtrate, reading your thread, I was going to try that out as my main issues is worrying about interactions with people.

Would you say that NAC had to be built up for you? I suffer from OCD so i am familiar with taking NAC and have quite abit, but i also stop it after 1-2 weeks because feeling no effects + the cancer scaring of the supplement

Edit: I also do own a bottle of Nature Made Tummeric but it doesnt seem to have the ingredients you listed and havent felt any effects after using

I find that as soon as I start taking NAC, it prevents mild psychosis symptoms from appearing. I get these mild psychosis symptom only a few days per month, but if I take NAC, they do not appear.

Have you researched high dose inositol for OCD? This is a well-known alternative treatment for OCD. High doses (eg 15 grams daily) of the B vitamin inositol raises serotonin, and for some people is effective for OCD. You can buy inositol powder by the kilogram online, search for "bulk inositol powder".

I tried Inositol a couple years, but i do not believe anywhere near the 15G dosages, i did get a slight mood boost but not sure if it was placebo, 15G is alot more than one would think.
Interesting, I will look into this. I have tried B12 (I believe methyl b12) and did not feel any effects

@Hip

Unfortunately, i have to put trying these supplements you provided on hold as experiencing severe sexual side effects from discontinuing Zoloft after a week, its been about 18 days since and not better.

Bought and took some NAG as I'm going through some acute life stress and haven't got much control over it. Felt a lot better after taking 700mg NAG. I am suspect for latent Lyme tho my ME might even be caused by Lyme so it's a bit tricky. I did notice my skin became very itchy after taking it not sure if that's normal or it woke up some Lyme bacteria?

On a side note I've been taking NAG for a week and I've noticed my canker sores seem a lot better than they have been NAG is meant to help with wound healing and I tend to get chronic canker sores due to some aspect of ME that I don't fully understand. It's early days but it seems to be helping.

I've also started ALA and Magnesium. Whilst mag is a long way down the list I've noticed profound relaxation wit the mag which makes me think I might be a tad low in mag in general. I can't take oral mag anymore as it gives me kidney stones.

The ALA also makes me feel a lot calmer, those 3 together have been enough to get my very high levels of anxiety under control.

My wife has never noticed anything from NAG. Maybe turmeric and maybe flaxseed but not enough to be able to clearly say they help.

Possibly @YippeeKi YOW !! s low and frequent dose magnesium plus melatonin plus vit c formula, although I later noticed what I thought was pure magnesium glycinate powder also contained glyceine and passionflower. Most likely it was the act of me caring for her, bringing her small drinks of this formula on a regular basis and being nice that was the real help.

Tried kava recently, even that didn't hugely help, although we only took a low dose.

Probably a hot milk drink is the best.

Hate to resurrect such an old topic but I just ordered 700 mg NAG to see how I do on it, lots of great reports and there doesn't seem to be many negatives on it in reviews or anywhere after cross referencing a bunch of forums and reddit. Will report back after I give it a go.

So I tried the NAG 700 mg this morning, weird supplement for me and I don't really know what to make of it. I took one capsule first thing in the morning, I noticed it made me feel less anxious and there was a bit less of an inflamed feeling in the usual suspects in my head. My senses felt a bit clearer too but mentally it made me feel a bit off. Not depressed but a bit dull and gloomy. My morning coffee felt like it had a bit less of a kick too and I wasn't as motivated. It also made my speech issues and processing of information a bit slower as I noticed when I got into work and started interacting with a lot of people. As the day went on as I was at work the initial anxiety reduction rebounded too but I still had a bit less cognitive power making everything a bit slower only now with higher anxiety levels making it worse. As of right now I just had my evening coffee and I'm drinking some cistus tea, my senses remain somewhat clearer but otherwise this hasn't done me any good even if it seems to tackle some kind of ongoing inflammation.

That's interesting. When I first started taking NAG, I found higher doses (like 3 x 700 mg) would make me feel a tad depressed. But I was OK with 700 mg doses. But months later, after I started using 700 mg daily, I found that this depression effect disappeared, and I could take higher doses without experiencing mild depression.

You might consider taking just half a 700 mg capsule, which may still reduce anxiety, but might not cause the gloominess. Then as you get used to this supplement, you can consider raising the dose later.

As the day went on as I was at work the initial anxiety reduction rebounded

You may find you need to take NAG twice daily, to keep anxiety at bay for the whole day.

Maybe it was some kind of mild herx in that case? I could see what happens if I half the dose and keep it going daily, if I took another full 700 mg later in the day I had a feeling that wouldn't have ended well and I have a bit more things to be responsible for my life at the moment so I can't take as many risks at the moment. If I try it again though I'll halve the dose and if it's manageable I'll keep at it and see if I get any longer term improvements.

edit - I've also noticed that tonight my usual nightly facial/head burning did not occur tonight so it must have altered some kind of immune chain reaction that was going on.

@Dysfunkion -- Could definitely be the case. I'd say overall, that your first day's experiences leave room for hope. It DID have effects, and now the challenge may be to figure out a dosing that might accentuate the positive(s) and alleviate the negative(s). I'll look forward to following your progress. BTW, I noticed immediate benefits when I first started taking NAG. Unfortunately, I often forget to take it, something I need to be more diligent about.

Yeah the issue is when you don't specifically know what the positives and the negatives from it were and you can really only continue to experiment and take educated guesses. The more I try on my journey here the more I'm getting a bigger picture on the issue.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6255162/ - Action of glucosamine on acetylcholine-sensitive channels

Decided to look up this in relation to the acetylcholine system and found this single study sitting around. I wonder if this explains what might have been happening. Now in my recent nicotine experiment here from this morning which also primarily targets this system that the nicotine relieved a lot of the symptoms that were negative from this glucosamine experiment but then quickly dumped me into a worse place. There could have been some ion flow disturbance that resulted in more clarity and less sensory problems but also as a result decreased the natural flow of ion creating downstream problems with overall signalling in my brain resulting in more problems using my voice, thinking/connecting information, automating physical movements, ect- which in many states is always an issue with me. I'll definitely reduce the dose and see if I can get the same benefits soon but bypass the negative side effects. The side effects since they also hit the same system as nicotine could have been viral backlash as both in their negatives had a sort of flu-y vibe but nicotine more so than glucosamine.

edit - https://academic.oup.com/jid/article-abstract/108/3/324/853995?redirectedFrom=fulltext&login=false - Glucosamine Utilization by some Lactic Acid Bacteria

I also found this, it's behind a paywall though, since glucosamine helped significantly with the brain burn crap I wonder if this rules out lactic acid doing that or if it might imply that in the case it is lactic acid overload in the brain that inflammation reduction results in a far lower amount very quickly anyways. Other culprits might be glutamate or histamine (but I think glutmate is far more likely). I'm not sure of glucosamines effect on my ability to at least tolerate music even though when I first took it I was less interested because of its initial effects but that might also provide a clue as the sound sensitivity, anxiety, brain burn, speech malfunction, stimulation intolerance in general, pressurized head effect, gut bloating, heart burn feelings, and inability to properly judge my body's positioning resulting in more awkward feelings outside or doing anything involving moving at all are all linked in my case. Different flares will flare these to different intensities but they all belong to the same cluster in my case.

This morning I tried half the capsule of 750 mg when I got up and didn't get anything much at all besides a barely noticeable slightly more relaxed feeling. A couple hours later nothing changed so I took the rest of the capsule and I found the benefits I get from this are consistent with hitting the dose level where I get side effects. At the 750 mg dose my brain feels noticeably less inflamed and my senses clear up more but I get some immune centered symptoms like increased nasal drip, a little random pressure in my head in a basic headachy way that comes on as fast as it goes, and it does something to the brain burn feeling and tinnitus as when I took the dose it started alering itself a bit in intensity as if when I take this stuff it doesn't know what to do.. I'll report back tonight on how I feel. Overall I like this stuff but I don't know what it's kicking up and if I could take care of that I'd take it every day. In fact I think now there isn't much to do but see what happens if I take it daily as the lower dose does almost nothing.

edit - https://www.nature.com/articles/250344a0 - Yeast-mycelial conversion induced by N-acetyl-D-glucosamine in Candida albicans

I wonder if the weird paradox of reactions occurring at once is due to this. If this also had antiviral properties which from quick search around it appears to this could be the reason for the clash. If the reaction continues across multiple days of use and doesn't improve (which I'm praying isn't the case and I don't need to abort) I wonder if I put it under my tongue and leave it there instead of letting it hit my digestive system I can avoid the side effects.

Edit aug 14th 3pm - at work on break here and now I'm certain what is going on here is a candida flare and is probably what a large part of my POIS episodes consist of as its basically the same thing but just somewhat less intense and with much less inflammation of some kind under it. This is hellish, can barely talk right so these flares are also partially anyways behind my vocal dysfunction. I also found that tailbone pain can also be flared by the candida flares as I cant imagine what else this reaction is since like I mentioned in another post this also flares with digestive issues and that is happening in the same exact fashion right now. Ill make it but this has been an unexpected disaster.

So I'm going to have to abort this for now and try again when this reaction calms down by letting it absorb under my tongue and spitting the rest out. Probably about a minute there, if it'll be of any use like that then it shouldn't need to sit there longer.

edit 7 PM - Just feeling very histamine-y right now especially in the face, nasal drip still, mouth is kinda dry, but mind and senses are clearer. The anxiety is clearly an immune reaction (probably histamine from the gut flare judging on how this feels) anxiety as under this I feel calm and better. Since small amounts hitting my guts don't seem to be an issue I hope under the tongue works and doesn't do this again. But I'm pretty sure it was a candida flare and the byproducts made my immune system go nuts. Probably one of my more interesting experiences with a supplement. Probably gonna make dinner tonight and load it up with a lot of garlic. So frustrating, hopefully this doesn't take too long to calm down. I'll give an update when I have more information.

edit 9:30 PM - Had some cauliflower and scallops with a little brown rice, heavy loaded up the pan with garlic and a teaspoon of black garlic. Tried a little of the rice when it was done cooking and no change. After eating a good plateful I'm experiencing a lot of relief from the ongoing symptoms from the garlic as I know the caulflower or scallops themselves don't do anything to me besides fill my belly. Yup more pointers it was an out of control candida flare immune cascade,

edit 6:45 AM - Woke up today in a clear histamine flare. High anxiety, doom, and face feeling like the I washed it with hot sauce (but not that normal brain burn feeling I get, this is more normal histamine burn). Overall inflamed feeling in a typical allergic reaction sort of way. Thankfully I have nothing to do after this morning today. Not sure when I'll try this stuff again the strictly under the tongue route instead but this has really shown me a big piece of what is going on with me and what is behind a lot of my neuro-psychiatric manifestations.

edit 10:40 AM - Went out and did some things, the over stimulated feeling I was having this morning just turned into typical flu-y malaise with a little nasal drip, head heaviness, a bit more difficult speaking, digestive system feels pretty uncomfortable, some throat pressure, and dry mouth (this one also flared with a similar feeling I'm having right now after the long phone call EMF incident in the same exact way). It was difficult to go out and do them but I got the things done as heavy, flu-y, and slow I felt (I think at this point I have become a master at masking). There is a slight pressure in my left ear that also comes on the easiest when I get tired from speaking, EMF over exposure, and too much music in one day (depending on volume and intensity). Still feeling quite histamine-y but at least it's somewhat better than early this morning. So not much left to do here but just rest and keep resting this off. Luckily I have nothing to do for the rest of today or tomorrow.
