Informational Links about Methylation
as of October 8, 2013
In case it might be of interest, below is a list of informational links about methylation that I have collected this year.
There are some disagreements amongst the experts/authors regarding the details, hypotheses, treatments, outcomes, etc. I have tried to include various points of view. I'm sure there are other experts/authors in the area of methylation whose work I have not run across yet online, and that would be the only reason that they were not on the list.
CONTENTS:
1. Articles, Presentations, and Videos about Methylation
2. Genetic Testing Resources
3. Programs that Analyze an Individual's 23andMe Genetic Data
A personal note:
While I understand some basics about genetics and nutrition, I do not have any knowledge of biochemistry. The topic of methylation is new and unintuitive to me, while it's apparent that many participants of PhoenixRising can mentally picture these interlocking bodily systems actually moving dynamically in time, with shortages and excesses building up, paths being closed off, other far-flung physical processes impinging, etc. I can do that with some other topics, but this one eludes me. The methylation diagrams look to me like a basket of yarn that a kitten has gotten into, and then spilled a box of alphabet-letters pasta on top of! If you feel similarly, do not be discouraged. Just grasp what you can, in your own time. The brief videos that Phoenix Rising member Caledonia created (see below for the link) might be a good first overview.

A list of methylation protocols - forum discussion
"...[In addition to Rich's and Freddd's protocols] there are also several other methylation-type treatments in use now, and they have all helped at least some people. They include the following:
The S. Jill James and the DAN! project protocols
The complete Amy Yasko treatment program
The Alan Vinitsky protocol (which uses hydroxocobalamin and high-dose folic acid)
The Derek Enlander protocol
The Sarah Myhill protocol
The Martin Pall protocol (which is moving toward including liposomal hydroxocobalamin and oral 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate
The PamLab prescription "medical foods": CerefolinNAC and Metanx
All these protocols are aiming at boosting the activity of methionine synthase, in my opinion, and all of them are helping some people. It would be helpful if there could be a controlled clinical comparison of these treatments on well-specified ME/CFS patients, but since for the most part these are non-patentable treatments, there is not likely to be funding available for this. In the meantime, we are operating on the basis of projections from available theory, limited clinical testing, and a lot of anecdotal reporting. It does seem to be true that methylation treatment in general is growing among the complementary and alternative physicians who treat ME/CFS and Lyme disease."

OpenSNP
http://opensnp.org/
Note: The above site publishes your data in the public domain (their FAQ page says, "The data will then be openly available for the world to see and download"). You may wish to consider the ramifications of publicly revealing your 23andMe dataset as a whole. These days, once something is online, even if you try to remove it later, there will be many copies that you won't be able to erase. If you do decide to upload your data there, it would be prudent to remove your real name from your 23andMe file, and to create a user name for that site which you don't use elsewhere and which does not contain identifying information.
On the plus side, the site is reported by PhoenixRising members to provide users with an automated Ian Logan "Minor Allele Program" report (which otherwise is somewhat complicated and time-consuming to create on one's own).
