Ninan I was just about to post in your thread before you tagged me! My experience with over-methylation was horrific and very acute (vs. yours sounded like it built up a bit slower with several nights of insomnia?) I am sorry to hear that this happened to you and definitely have the Niacin on hand!
I started with B-12 injections at 5 mg/ml for 1-2 wks and they felt great. Then I added the methyl-folate first at a 1/4 of a 2.5 mg tab, then built up to 1/2 a 2.5 mg tab and all seemed okay. So (in my ignorance) I increased the B-12 shot to 7 mg/ml and the Folate to the full 2.5 mg tab (on the same day.)
I ate breakfast and took my supplements and seemed okay. I was then sitting at the computer answering e-mails and felt very jittery and shaky. I suddenly got a headache and felt like I was going to throw up. Then the worst part was my muscles started twitching and I got really agitated (physically and mentally) and my HR went up to 140 (while sitting!)
Thank God my husband was home b/c I panicked and my HR kept increasing and wouldn't go down. I had the Niacin thanks to Caledonia's superb advice and my husband gave me Atenolol, Niacin, and other electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, salt stick, etc.)
The total reaction lasted for three days and I was so agitated that I threw a water bottle and knocked over a stand in our office (which is totally out of character for me.) I also got extremely depressed telling my husband he should leave me b/c I was so ill and useless, etc. My husband called my doctor (who was on vacation) so we spoke with the other doctor who said it was definitely over-methylation and to stop the B-12 & Folate for at least two weeks. My regular doctor then e-mailed me and advised me to stop my thyroid med, too, and go in for a bunch of blood and urine tests (b/c he wanted to rule out other causes and is super thorough.)
So at the moment I am not to take any methylation supps until the test results are in. My plan once I can re-start is to start Low and Slow as everyone advises here on PR. I plan to take 200 mcg of Folate and 1 mg B-12 shot every day (until the shots run out and then switch to sublingual.) If this is still too high, I will go even lower. If this works, I will stay at this dose for 6-8 wks before trying to increase.
I got advice from a lot of the experts on PR b/c the entire methylation process was (and still is) very new for me. Hope it goes well for you and would love to hear updates if you don't mind!
ETA: I take D-Ribose 2x/day (mixed in water at breakfast and dinner) and have never had a bad reaction to it.
