Nicorandil.....A role in treating CFS

Yes, it’s specific to my personal situation. For the average person, if they did get ulceration, they could stop taking the drug and the ulcers would heal. But not for me. It sounds rather dramatic, but even one little ulcer in the wrong place could land me in very serious trouble (potentially fatal).

So I am under strict instructions never to take any medications that can cause ulceration under any circumstances, even if it’s a one in a million risk.

My bowel surgeon did say that if I really had to take it, he would need to do much more frequent scopes, which would mean lots of exhausting bowel prep, trips to Melbourne, and cost.

I would definitely encourage anyone who doesn’t have an unusual situation like me to give it a try though :)

@kangaSue , I just had a funny feeling and decided to look back through some of the medications I’ve been on in the past. I immediately found one that I possibly shouldn’t have been taking – fludrocortisone, which is contraindicated for ulcerative colitis.*

Feel quite shaken. It was prescribed on two occasions by two specialists, both of whom knew I had UC. GP did not notice. My pharmacist would probably have warned me, but I just remembered he doesn’t know I had UC. Must tell him.

I took it for about three months. Thank goodness nothing bad happened!

I always check interactions and contraindications now, but back then I had terrible brain fog (and didn’t even know how bad it was).

*I realise contraindications don’t necessarily mean that you can’t take a medication, just that there has to be extra discussion, consultation with specialists, maybe extra monitoring, etc. But that didn’t happen.

Even though I can eat again, it is quite a restrictive pool of food I can cope with, low fat and no fibre and herbal supplements continue to be a challenge, something I really don't understand why.

Hi @kangaSue -- I don't recall this thread from all those years ago, but I do see that I "liked" it. I don't know what your situation is now, but you may find this post of mine to be of interest. -- Best...

I think HBOT can have a somewhat similar effect to that of nicorandil (and other nitrovasodilators) in that it helps to balance out the mechanisms of vasodilation and vasoconstriction rather than it being all about an improved macro blood flow.
