ME caused by squeezed nerve?

Hi! I met a man who claims he has treated between 40 to 50 ME patients who are all cured today (I guess I lost 70% of you there ;) ). He has a daughter who nearly died of ME, and in his desperation he says he searched high and low for a way to get her well again, and that he came across a man who had undergone 16 years of training in Chinese medicine, under two "gurus" - eight years with each. There is supposedly just a handful left of them in the whole world who has that training :s

This "guru" (who now lives in the Jungle in Vietnam - did I loose another 10% there? ) taught him how to treat his daughter. She is completely healed now, and this I know to be true as this man is the cousin to my brother in law. His family, of whom I know quite a few, can testify to that the child was very sick (bed bound, dark room, no sound, and so on) and now is living full speed. The man himself is said to be a very good guy. He's said to be kind and generous, very helpful and self sacrificing, not after money.

Had I not know so many first hand witnesses, I guess I would never consider this, but I am wondering, and extreeeemly sceptical... He claims ME is cause by the atlas bone being somehow out of position, putting pressure on some nerve (vagus nerve perhaps?). He says he can fix me, but it will take about 6 months time, 4-5 days a week... I will have to drop every other treatment, and fully concentrate on his instruction.

Did anyone ever hear about this? What's your thought? I have to admit I have more or less decided not to go for it, but thought just to hear with you guys.

I was curious, so I Googled.

This is a discussion about the sort of treatment I imagine this person is offering you. Doesn't sound particularly promising.
http://boards.dailymail.co.uk/compl...realignment-1st-vertebra-any-info-please.html

This is an abstract indicating chiropractic adjustment of the atlas can reduce hypertension equivalent to the use of pharmaceuticals.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17252032

And this is an Australian medical practitioner's blog (unspecified field of practice) listing symptoms of a subluxation.
http://atlassubluxation.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/symptoms-and-signs-of-atlas-subluxation/ This person had the same treatment done as referenced in the DailyMail discussion, but needed extensive bodywork/chiropractic in addition.

I would also question the need to drop all other therapies, particularly if he is doing some sort of manual therapy.

Well........skepticism is warranted with unproven techniques. On the one hand I like to have science on my side.
On the other hand though (and this is where people drop off) with ME --desperate measures for desperate times.

It's tempting to try things. I will say that I have had help from body work (when I could afford it) and although it wasn't this particular treatment I did learn one important thing......it's all about the skill of the particular person doing the treatment (not to mention whether the treatment is the right choice for what ails you)

I would question and consider what possible things could go wrong the way one would consider side effects of a drug treatment.

The part about dropping everything else also puzzled, even alarmed, me quite a lot. I wonder if he mentioned that his approach is somewhat different than the common kinds of practitioners. Anyways, at least one extremely sick ME patient that I know of for sure got well after this treatment... that's what sort of makes me not fully discard it... and he says he has good contact still with some of the worst cases he treated, and they are still sound and well...

I am skeptical for many reasons but mostly b/c if this man cured 40-50 people with severe ME as he claims, we would have heard about it. It's one of those things that could not be kept secret for too long.

I also don't see why other treatments would need to be dropped. My new CFS specialist fully endorses what I am doing with my naturopath and I will continue all of her treatments even after I start the anti-viral.

My personal opinion: Anything that takes you out of the stress of daily live and drop everything for 6 months, Change on food, getting massages and pampered everyday will get you if not all the way there pretty close. Just my humble opinion. When I do nothing but Spa like life I can see a huge difference.

I don't know if it works or not. I doubt it. However I do know that after six months you will have paid a lot of money. If it doesn't work, there goes a stack of cash. If it works it will probably be worth the cost. If it doesn't work ... can you afford to be still sick and have lost all that money? Is this person going to treat you for free?

Well, this man is working as a carpenter, so this is something he would do on his spare time. I don't think he would charge too much per hour. My parents are quite eager that I try, and I looks like they would help out... but as I said, not feeling too keen myself.

I wouldn't consider the symptoms you gave as ME. Bedridden, dark room, no sound. Those sound like migraine management techniques.

Sorry - didn't mean that those were the ME symptoms, but it was meant to describe the level of severity of her condition.

Tx but I'm still trying to determine if this treatment would help ME. I'm in the 20% who want to know more. ☺Do you know anymore about her condition ?

When I first became ill with ME in 1990, I saw a chiropractor once or twice a week and had massage therapy 3 times a week at my house.

I had myofascial pain syndrome, mps, but I didn't know what it was back then. I'd received 2 whiplash injuries within 6 weeks about 1 year prior to getting ME.

This chiropractic and massage treatment was completely useless for my ME and mps. We never saw any progress.

What helped was getting my food intolerances, esp gluten, out of my diet so my body could heal itself. Celiacs won't heal properly if they're eating gluten.

I suspect quinolones started my myofascial pain syndrome, just one of my ME symptoms, based on my reaction to quinolones last year. I'm healing this time but I suspect it's because I'm gf and I'm a celiac.

I was just wondering if OI could be from a damaged vertebrae. And if he's really treating OI. Recently an article was written that stated me/cfs could actually be oi/pots.

My "bullshit" alarm is also ringing on this one. If there truly was a cure for CFS/ME, you could bet that this would be headline news. You are being scammed.

What I am sure of is that he's not trying to scam me. He has actually expressed he rather not treat me as his too busy with his life, but since I know his family, and if I really want to, he'll do it. In fact it was my sister who asked him to share about his experience with ME with me. So, I do believe that he's convinced that he can cure me, and that he has no intention to scam me.

However, the doubt lies with me if he really can do what he says he can do, and if I'd bother to try :)
He claims that this man who taught him the technique tried to get inside the medical circles in Norway and that he offered to teach them what he knew about ME, but they refused, so he left the country and moved to Vietnam :)

@optimist that's good b/c you don't want to end up making yourself worse. Right now in my case I take meds for thyroid, tachycardia, GI issues, etc, so anyone offering a magic cure that also told me to stop my meds, I would be running for the hills LOL
