diphenhydramine works perfectly for me when I get really itchy. It makes one sleepy so I just take it at bedtime if I'm really itchy. I take it maybe once or twice a week.

Flares of red burning and itching on my face and neck (flush/rash) started at age 16, which I recently learned is a common symptom of adolescent ME/CFS.

In adulthood, a dermatologist diagnosed me with Poikiloderma of Civatte, which is due to photosensitivity and probably genetic.

However, I experienced significantly more pain and itching than is typical with this disorder, and worsening coincided as much with ME/CFS relapses as with sun exposure.

Fortunately, most of the pain, itching, and redness went away after about 6 IPL laser treatments. These laser treatments are fairly painful. Also, IPL is considered "cosmetic" dermatology and so of course insurance generally doesn't cover it.

It's been 2 years since my last IPL laser treatment. I now only have occasional mild burning and itching. It's a wonderful feeling. If my Poikiloderma worsens, I'll go back for another treatment.
