For personal safety, whether you are a man or a woman I think it is better not to be in the same room with someone when you end things with them, unless you feel very emotionally safe (which isn't usually the case in a break up). People can feel rejected and angry and may turn on you in a way that can be unpleasant or dangerous in an extreme case. Also if you leave someone quickly and leave belongings behind, do not return alone to get them. You never know what someone will do when they feel hurt and rejected.
People can hide their craziness for months while you build an attachment to them!
