Is it Dementia... or B12?

Hi,

My father was diagnosed with parkinson's with dementia 7-8 years ago and is confined to wheelchair for the past 1-1/2 years. He has been undergoing treatment for the same. He also has BP and diabetes and has been taking medicine for the same for past 20 years, both of which are completely under control.

As we know that parkinson's with dementia is a progressive disease, want to know if his dementia can be treated if given B12 treatment. His B12 serum count is 303 pg/ml.
He has difficulty in understanding what we speak to him and does not respond accordingly.

Please advise.

You may know this already - there's evidence that PWP on levodopa have low levels of B12 and folate http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18055246. Also http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22367474
The low level of serum B12 referred to is presumably according to standard reference ranges and there's evidence that people with 'normal' levels can suffer from neurological problems - like me with a serum B12 level of 330 ng/L (ref range in Uk 160 - 901 ng/L) - the people in these studies must have been extremely low (I haven't read the full articles, it would be interesting to know).

This report of a study of B12 deficiency in the elderly http://www.myhealthnewsdaily.com/1721-low-vitamin-b12-spurs-dementia.html says "One noteworthy result of the new study, Smith said, was that reduced brain volume and lower cognitive performance were seen in those whose vitamin B12 levels were still above the official cutoff for B12 deficiency.

My brother's going to get an online test for B12/folate, at least to establish a baseline before taking any supplements.

There's this website started by a Dr Chandy a GP in Durham, Uk who claims B12 deficiency with neuro-psychiatric symptoms is 10 - 13% of the population rather than the accepted 0.06 - 0.2%. http://b12d.org/sites/default/files/PDF/B12-A_Retrospective_Study.pdf
