A2 milk - anybody tried it?

I normally have problems with milk and milk products, and don't have much of them at all. Mainly in the digestive system and with the mucous response (ie stuffs up my sinuses), and just generally makes me feel worse.

Over the last couple of days for the first time I have tried A2 type milk (see here and here), and it seem a lot less problematic. Still not problem free, and I am not planning to include it in my regular diet, but I do seem to tolerate it significantly better than A1 milk (the 'standard' milk).

What are other's experiences with A2 milk?

(For those who don't know, the difference between A1 and A2 is the type of beta casein protein.)

Hi Sean, I have very similar sounding probs with milk as you described - it's never agreed with me.
I have tried A2 milk a couple of years ago.....and I tried it with my dairy intolerant son (it affects his skin).
I did notice less of a problem in my case but didn't note any change in my son's reaction.
The dairy I tolerate best (least sinus reaction) is 24hr fermented yogurt. I use organic milk for that, but I haven't sourced organic A2 milk yet. I'm avoiding all dairy just now but when I challenge test some next I make it a mission to see how I react to A2 made into yogurt. I'd love to be able to tolerate some dairy!
Thanks for reminding me about A2 :)

Thanks for that, Anne.

Haven't seen any A2 based products, like yogurt or cheese, only the plain milk. Will keep an eye out for them. Are you making your own yogurt?

I like milk stuff, and miss it. But after only eating small amounts for decades, I am used to not having it, and it does not take much to remind me why I should not eat it more than occasionally. I just take calcium supplements instead, and grab another piece of nice fresh fruit. :Retro smile:

Sean, yes I make my own yogurt. Actually you have got me really intrigued to find out how I do with cultured A2 sometime.
I've never had a lot of dairy either, always preferred cheese and yogurt to actual milk. (Thanks goodness they stopped giving children a compulsory half pint of milk each at school every morning before I turned 5! Warm milk sitting in glass bottles in the sun....*shudder* at the thought.)
My son does ok with some limited sheeps milk cutlured products, and I know some do well with goats milk.
Enjoy your A2!
Anne.

Let us know how you go with it.

As I said, it is still not problem free for me so I will still be largely avoiding milk stuff, but it is an interesting result and A2 will be my first choice if I do use milk.

I've not tried the A2 but gave up dairy years ago. I drink rice milk every day that has added calcium and much prefer it. Just a thought...:)

From what I read, almost all cows in the US produce type A1. Seems to be hard to find A2, I think maybe only heritage breeds have that type?
Just in case you don't know, I am in Australia, and it is pretty easy to get here. Most supermarkets stock it, though in small quantities. The vast majority is still A1, and I am pretty sure that virtually all milk products are made from A1 at the moment.

Not that badly, but pretty badly for about two decades. I use omeprazole, and it works very well for me. Sorry to hear the medications for it don't work for you. Serious reflux is horrible.

Did swapping milk types help your reflux at all?

Thanks for that. Haven't tried rice milk, will grab some next time I see it. Tried soy milk, and it is okay for some things, but it is not really a milk substitute in my books. Also tends to be loaded with salt, and sometimes sugar, no thanks.

Hi Sean, I buy the Pure Harvest "Aussie Dream" organic rice milk. No preservatives; just filtered water, organic brown rice, sunflower oil and sea salt.

Thanks, Tony. Do you get it at the local regular supermarket? Or will I likely have to look in more specialist shops for it?

Coles and Safeway both stock it, so it's easy to get. I think only Coles has the one with added calcium. That one's in an orange and white one litre box, the blue and white one is without the extra calcium.
Cheers...:)

Hi Cher, I expect you have tried Zantac (ranitidine). Apologies if I'm going over old ground. I have more success with Ranitidine than the more recently developed proton pump inhibiters (Losec etc). Ranitidine is an over-the-counter Histamine 2 blocker, so it works quite differently. I have hiatus hernia, esophageal ulceration, bloating. PPIs didn't seem to touch it. Found ranitidine excellent for the bloating in particular.

Also gave up gluten and sulphites.

Tried some of that rice milk and it is easier to deal with than regular milk. Like soy milk the taste is quite different and takes a bit of getting used to, but it's okay.

Unfortunately it is pretty high in sugars (106 grams per litre) even though it has none added, and I am guessing it is pretty low in fibre (doesn't list any), which is not a good combination. I already carry a few extra kilos, so I'll probably just have it occasionally, and stick to good old water plus calcium supplements most of the time.

Cheers
