Here are some drug protocols used to kill Blastocystis hominis, with their percentage success rates indicated:
This study achieved a
60% eradication rate using an orally-taken triple drug cocktail of:
diloxanide furoate 500 mg x 3 daily
Bactrim DS (trimethoprim 160 mg & sulfamethoxazole 80 mg) x 2 daily
secnidazole 400 mg x 3 daily
This study achieved a
82% eradication rate using an orally-taken triple drug cocktail of: comprising:
secnidazole 400 mg x 3 daily
furazolidone 100 mg x 3 daily
nitazoxanide 500 mg x 2 daily
all taken for 10 days.
This study achieved a
94% eradication rate in children from orally taken:
Saccharomyces boulardii probiotic — one capsule (of 5 million CFU) twice daily
all taken for 10 days.
This study (also
here) achieved a
96% eradication rate using two intra-colonic infusions (enemas) of three anti-parasite agents:
nitazoxanide 3 grams
furazolidone 900 mg
secnidazole 3.6 grams
This study achieved a
100% eradication rate using a single intra-colonic infusion of:
nitazoxanide 5 grams
furazolidone 1.5 grams
secnidazole 6 grams
followed by 10 days oral
nitazoxanide 500 mg taken twice a day.
This study found that the antibiotic
rifaximin 600 mg x 3 daily for 14 days eradicates Blastocystis hominis.
Yakoob et al found
garlic 4 grams daily to have a similar efficacy to metronidazole for treating Blastocystis hominis. Note: a 180 mg capsule of
allicin (a garlic extract) is equivalent to around 200 grams of garlic.
There are some toxicity concerns with furazolidone though (and to a lesser extent with nitazoxanide). For this reason, I devised my own Blastocystis hominis protocol, which is this:
My Own Blastocystis hominis protocol:
Allicin 180 mg x 2
Nitazoxanide 500 mg (take on full stomach)
Septrin DS (trimethoprim 160 mg + sulfamethoxazole 80 mg)
Saccharomyces boulardii 2 capsules
I took all the above twice daily for 10 days. The advantage of the above protocol is that all the meds are non-toxic, except nitazoxanide (but nitazoxanide is not as toxic as furazolidone).
I reasoned if 1 capsule of Saccharomyces boulardii daily has a 96% eradication rate, then 4 capsules daily in my above protocol will be even better, not to mention the addition of lots of other Blasto-killing meds like allicin, nitazoxanide and Septrin DS into my protocol.
