Good news @meadowlark ! Thanks so much.
The reason they ask you for your correct email address is to be able to send you a confirmation code to complete the registration process in order to activate an account for you. They do not make your email public and it shows up nowhere. Having your user name the same as your email address actually simplifies things if you want to log in again in the future.
This particular newspaper uses whatever you enter in as a 'first name'. I entered only 'B' so the comment shows up as 'By B'. Another used 'Wendy' so her comment shows up as 'By Wendy'. Many people use nicknames.
It doesn't have to be your actual name as long as it is an actual valid email address so you click on the link that they will send you in order to access their site to comment.
Hope this is clear but if not feel free to ask anything additional.
Thanks and best wishes.
