I have no idea what dopamine's role might be. I'll leave that to trained biologists. I'll stick to hypotheses I can actually follow without too much brain-strain. I'll think about simple hypotheses and try to find supporting or contradicting evidence for them.

We might be on to something here:
There seems to be some link between dopamine and thyroid function.

"dopamine administration was associated with reduced serum concentrations of growth hormone, TSH, T4, and prolactin after 12 hours of administration in very low birth weight infants [3]. The apparent effect of dopamine as a potent inhibitor of growth hormone and prolactin was reversed on withdrawal of the dopamine"
