FWIW, I get detox reactions from glucosamine sulphate.
Mercola: So the actual levels of ferritin may be elevated because of sulfur deficiency?
Seneff: Yes, sulfur deficiency, sulfate deficiency and cholesterol deficiency.
Hey slayadragon!
Thanks heaps for posting the following!
It's more confirmation that I'm on the right track supplementing sulfur [so far, my supplement has been sodium sulfate].
My ferritin has been high at least since Oct 2004 when I first had it tested. Then it was 177. The normal range was 13-150. More recently it was 225.
May you slay many dragons, especially the chief dragon!
Blessings to you!
What doesn't sound right is the idea that we're deficient in sulfur. We'd have to be _really_ deficient to be this screwed up (e.g. to have all that rouleaux going on), and eating eggs does not seem to be the solution!
Hi Slayadragon,
Since I wrote my two papers on ME/CFS and sulfur metabolism (see http://aboutmecfs.org.violet.arvixe.com/RsRch/H2S.pdf andhttp://www.cfids-cab.org/MESA/Lemle.pdf), and specifically, hydrogen sulfide metabolism, several years ago, a number of people have started to look more closely as the emerging research related to H2S and some are going back and reconsidering sulfur metabolism in light those emerging findings, particularly in the area of redox. This is all to the good and will lead to some much needed answers, I think.
As for a frank sulphur deficiency, I think it is possible and I have said so in the past. I know of someone who was cured of ME/CFS through sulfur supplementation. As for depleted soil, I very much believe that good, nutritious food depends upon good soil, and good health depends upon good nutrition. I try to buy only organic meats and produce (which are higher in nutrition as the plants haven't depended upon their version of antibiotics to fight off invaders), mostly from local farmers at the weekly market. Many people have improved their conditions through a gluten, dairy and (refined) sugar-free diet with an emphasis on fresh greens rich in chlorophyll, folate and sulfur. Most raw fruits and vegetables are very beneficial in shifting the ph balance toward alkalinity. I recommend getting a copy of Dr. Russell Jaffe's chart "Food and Chemical Effects on Acid/Alkaline Body Chemical Balance".
Unfortunately, for most people with ME/CFS, getting enough sulfur may not be the whole answer. Many people are allergic to sulfur-containing foods such as eggs, and many of the top allergens, such as milk, corn syrup, and wine produce hydrogen sulfide. Often these allergies are hidden and cause delayed lymphocyte reactions up to a couple of days later. A thorough allergy work-up before working with a dietician is useful, as one does not necessarily know what one is allergic to. My go-to source for information and testing of the lymphocyte reactions is the LRA by ELISA/ACT test conceived of by Dr. Jaffe.
Additionally, sugar promotes the growth of yeast, which in turn produce H2S. Mold in the environment also produces H2S, which can support the growth of dangerous bacteria in addition to causing serious allergic reactions. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) allergies/sensitivities are also important, I think.
Only partly related to diet, an over-abundance of anaerobic sulfur-producing and consuming bacteria is also a significant problem for most people with ME/CFS. The V.A. is testing the use of the antibiotic rifaximin on Gulf War victims. Rifaximin targets hydrogen sulfide specifically in the gut. I am still thinking about cell-wall deficient mycoplasmas and whether they could serve as bridges for viruses.
I have talked about the gut/brain link and it has recently been confirmed that gut dysbiosis can cause depression and anxiety. I think that link is hydrogen sulfide. BTW, it has just been discovered that the bacterial H2S gas is not just a toxic bystander, but actually protects bacteria from antibiotics! My guess is that antibiotic overuse, particularly use of sulfur-related ones such as Bactrim, have wreaked havoc upon our collective digestive systems.
A further known complication for some people is a CBS polymorphism. The body produces hydrogen sulfide through several enzymes, including cystathionine beta synthase (CBS). CBS produces H2S in the brain, where it modulates NMDA glutamate receptor function. H2S protects neurons from glutamate toxicity by increasing the production of glutathione. Long-term potentiation is altered in the absence of H2S, which suggests the involvement of H2S in synaptic activity, so looking more closely at CBS and H2S is very important. Much has been said about B-12 (but little of its effect on H2S), but I actually believe that P-5-P and NAC may be just as important.
There is much more to say about mitochondrial depolarization, ion channels, etc. etc. but I hope this helps to put a conceptual framework around some of the issues we confront in ME/CFS.

Hi Rich
Wow, another confirmation today! This time for my metafolin supplement. If you have any links for me on the ferritin/folate connection, I'd sure appreciate them, Rich.
Meanwhile, I've had no feedback here at Phoenix Rising for the use of quatrefolic. It's a folate in my B Complex [Swanson brand, link below]
Has anyone tried Quatrefolic? It was made available in 2010. If anybody has experience with it for CFS, I'd be very interested to hear of it. Here are some links:

Thanks again, Rich!

I wonder if the egg white (which contains most of the sulfur) might be the allergenic part. Mercola says that he throws the whites away and eats just the yolks. I don't have a frank egg allergy/reactivity now, but I've never felt particularly good about eating eggs even before I got sick. Maybe I'll try just the yolks though, to see how those feel.
Hi Dan,Hi Marian,
Thanks so much for your post. Could you talk more about the parts I've bolded? I have one of the CBS mutations. Yasko says it increases ammonia levels, but I haven't heard anything about H2S levels. I'm so confused, and SO full of anxiety...have lost 10% of my body weight in the last year, so this sulfur (and cholesterol sulfate topic) is very intriguing to me.
And if H2S 'protects' neurons, then why the increased anxiety and/or depression? Not enough sulfur or sulfate?
