Single neuron may carry over 1,000 UNIQUE mutations

A single neuron in a normal adult brain likely has more than a thousand genetic mutations that are not present in the cells that surround it, according to new research. The majority of these mutations appear to arise while genes are in active use, after brain development is complete.

Hmmmm. Could this be related to aging? Mutations would most likely accumulate over time.

Not just aging, but also formation of memories. There is a lot of research about long-term potentiation, and no signs the subject is exhausted. This has direct relevance to MS. Enhanced perception of noxious stimuli and degraded cognitive performance show up in a range of illnesses.

Neurons are highly specialised cells. Genes that are not needed for functioning will mutate with no consequence. Any genes that mutate that reduce functioning will greatly increase the chance of death of the cell.

Why are we assuming that these mutations are detrimental to neuron function? Why not positive?
