SF-36 : Norms, skewness and 'top box' scores in a surgical population.

found that there were several deficiencies
in the conduct of these studies. One of the
most common problems was inappropriate
statistical analysis. The proper statistical
analysis of data is essential in interpreting
the results of any study.3 Commonly,
data from the SF-36 have been presented as
means with standard deviations or standard
errors of the mean. The basic assumption
of these studies is that the data follow
a normal (gaussian) distribution, having a
“bell-shaped” curve. However, many of
these studies did not perform the statistical
tests4 needed to determine if, indeed, the
data follow the normal distribution necessary
