I just googled some images. My tounge dosn't look patchy. The white layer starts from the throat and will cover the whole tounge if I don't clean it regulary.
My white geographic tongue coating was patchy originally, but then after a year or so, the coating permanently and uniformly covered my whole tongue. So you don't have to have patches. One theory is that geographic tongue is simply an oral version of psoriasis (which is an autoimmune disease). IL-1B polymorphisms are a risk factor for developing geographic tongue. Reference: here.
The other type of tongue coating is oral candidiasis, but this appears not just on the tongue, but also on other areas of the mouth, such as the roof of the mouth. Oral candidiasis also has a different texture, looking a bit like cottage cheese.
