Hi, all.

It's interesting to find out what supplements are helping people. Along this line, if you haven't checked the CureTogether.com site, you might be interested in doing so, and maybe posting your results there, too. This site compares over 140 treatments and lifestyle changes that people have tried for CFS, and they continue to collect data by "crowd sourcing." It is necessary to sign into the site to contribute data, but anyone can look at the current results. Note both the "stats" for "treatment" and the Infographic:

http://www.curetogether.com/chronic-fatigue-syndrome/treatments/

To sign in, go to www.curetogether.com

Some of the supplements that people have reported on in this thread are part of the methylation treatment protocols, which are continuing to run fairly high in the ranking of effectiveness at CureTogether.com. If you haven't considered this type of treatment, I would encourage you to do so. Information can be found at www.cfsresearch.org by clicking on CFS/M.E. and then on my name. The most important aspect of the various methylation protocols is that they combine active forms of folate (5-methyl tetrahydrofolate, aka Metafolin or FolaPro, and/or folinic acid) with high-dose B12 (either hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin, and I prefer the former). Using B12 alone does not seem to have the same effect as taking it together with active folate. The other supplements included in these protocols are supportive, supplying cofactors that might be deficient in individual people.

Best regards,

Rich

Hi, Sallysblooms: Is there a blood test to determine a persons level of L-Carnitine? I was looking at the product CARNICLEAR. How did your doctor determine that Carnitine would be of benefit to you? I know there are blood tests for certain vitamins and nutrients, but not all.... Thanks!

I didn't get tested for L Carnitine. With my air hunger, brain fog, , etc of my POTS, my doctor recommened the Cariclear. It is really good for me. It is good for my brain, energy and other things. The amino acid is in meat and I eat meat but just as many of us, when we are ill, we need more. My doctor goes by my symptoms on many supplements.

Like I said, I can't choose three, I would be back like I was last year without my supplements.

The top supplements for me right now that I simply can't do without (some change periodically) would be:

Vitamin D (cognitive improvement & neuropathy)
Betaine HCL (digestion)
Lauricidin (inflammation & yeast issues)
Equilibrant/Oxymatrine (improving general well being & maybe disorientation)

This is all so interesting, keep it coming !! A lot of recurring magnesuim and b multi and vitamine c, I am surprised carnitine does not appear more often. Maybe we can establish a general top 3 list from this.

One thing I figure out recently is it is often cheaper to buy powdered supplements rather than capsules. For instance you can get three times as much taurine by powder than buying capsules. The downside is it can be bitter to drink. :eek:P

Powdered supplements
I want to buy bulk powders and make my own capsules. but all the wholesalers get their product from CHina and I'm concerned about contamination.
Of course, a lot of the capsules I buy may be made with chinese product.
It's a dilemma.

top supplements

Ok so these are the supplements that most often pop up (in no particular order)

-Magnesium (malate) (>300mg magnesium)
-multi b (thorne and pure encapsulations carry active bvits with metafolin) (dose 1 cap)
-b12 (Dose?)
-metafolin (active folic acid) (dose 400-800mg)
-Acetyl Carnitine (Dose 3 gm)
-vitamin D (dose >2000 IU)
Vitamin C (dose >2 gm)

These also are mentioned repeatedly:
-activated thiamin (benfothiamine or authia cream)
-5http or tryptophan
-olive leaf extract
-probiotics
-betaine hcl
-gluthathione
- Sam-e (dose 800mg)
-(R-)LA (dose 600mg LA or 200mg R-LA)
-Q10 (dose 200mg)
-Fish oil (2 caps)
-neuropower from NSI (multivitamin that includes q10, acetyl carnitine, LA, high dose vit D and methylb12) (6 caps)

could people that take one of those supplements also mention the DOSE that they find most helpful? This can help others. especially would like to know the optimal dose of vitamin c, vitamin d, gluthathione and magnesium malate. I have included the doses as I think they are, but correct me if I am wrong.

PS My 3 best supplements, Vitamin D, Magnesium Malate and B Complex. Yes, I take a MultiVitamin every day, and I take prescription Fish oil and LDN.

I take at least 5,000 IUs year round, 8,000 IUs in the Winter, take 2 B Complex tablets/day by B+Js, and I take Source Naturals 1250 mgs (yielding 833mg) with each meal, 2 to 3/day.

GG

PS Vitamin C 2 to 3grams/day. 3 grams of Fish oil/day. 4.5 mgs, going to talk to my Dr in regards to whether I should try pulsing this?

the supplements that I feel are for sure helping me are the ones that help digestion and detoxing.

1- Dr Schultze's - Intestinal formula 1 ( herbal formula that helps with elimination)
2- Futureplex -Ultra Antitox ( homeopathic drops)

For mental clarity and help with sleep.

3- Sharp Thought by Country life- main ingredient phosphatidylserine

I take many more but, can't vouch for their effectiveness.

Yeah, I see that a lot of people have had issues with LDN, even I might have, not sure since I started it up over a year ago during a MAJOR flare! I had not experienced anything like it being sick for nearly 8 years now. I have recently run out and should have some in the mail any day.

OT but I think it is important if you don't take it for a few days, to again build up from a low dose.
Why do you think ldn gives you issues? How are you doing at the mo?

Good point aquarius girl. I just mix it the powders with apple juice, but having capsules is a necessity when I have to go overnight somewhere. It ends up being to much to carry a garbage bag full of pill bottles on a trip.

I avoid anything in the way of food I can from China, Didn't think about supplements begin from China too. Yikes!

I bought some bulk clay from mountainroseherbs.com, they sell a bunch of herbal type products they claim is organic, I read their page and they sounded legit.

Actually life extension vitamins sometimes has a pdf file that shows the exact percentage breakdown of what you are getting(for some products, I think it was thymic immune factors that hada pdf sheet). LIfe extension has their own bunch of specialists one can call. Maybe they can give you some guidance on the quality and location for their supplements?

Nutricology's MVM-A (multivitamin mineral - antioxidant formula?) because it provides (in addition to the usual multivitamins) substantial amounts of the things we PWCs need, vitamin C, lots of all the Bs, D-3,Zinc, N-Acetyl-l-Carnitine, lipoic acid.

Nutricology's NAC Enhanced Antioxidant Formula -- for improved glutathione production

Extra B-12 in different forms over time -- sublingual hydroxo drops, B-12 Extreme (all forms of B-12), and currently a methyl B-12 sublingual because it's relatively cheap and seems effective.

I used to take Super EPA (~fish oil) and CoQ-gamma E, but they seemed to play havoc with my blood pressure (lowering it, which I don't need.

It is impossible to pick only 3, but I will list the 3 without which I would be dead, unable to eat, or blind by now from Lyme uveitis.

1. Doctor's Best L-tryptophan- 3,000 mgs.
2. NSI L-glutamine - 5 grams in H20
3. NSI Benfotiamine - 150 mgs.

I also really need:

4. Nutricology Magnesium citrate - 510 mgs. in 3 divided doses
5. Jarrow B-Right - 1 daily
6. Carlson Vit. D-3 - 6,000 units/day to maintain a D level of 80 for pain control and cancer prevention.
7. Source Naturals Neptune Krill Oil - 1,200 mgs. to keep triglycerides down

There are many others, like NSI 15-30 Probiotics, Nutramedix Samento, NSI Creatine powder, and NSI Ubiquinol, but I have already cheated by listing 7.
