Dizziness seems a very common ME / CFS symptom. According to this study the single most common cause of general dizziness, is spinal canal narrowing (spinal stenosis). As already mentioned in other threads, spinal stenosis is strongly implicated as a causative factor in both fibromyalgia and CFS. If dizziness is one of your main symptoms, it is quite possible that a structural problem might be the root cause.

A 15-month retrospective study of 1,000 outpatients was conducted to determine the exact cause of general dizziness. The most common diagnosis in all analyzed cases was cervicogenic general dizziness (89%). The majority of the patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine had narrow spinal canals. Measuring the anteroposterior diameter of the spinal canal in each case was critical to obtain an accurate diagnosis in line with the diagnostic criteria used.

If they found cervical stenosis in 89 percent of dizzy sufferers, in what percent of the controls (non-dizzy age and gender match etc) did they find cervical stenosis? Depending on whether that control is say 1 percent vs. say 60 percent changes how one thinks about the result.

Also, Curious how they define "dizziness" since means different things to differnt people and how and where they selected the subjects could make a huge difference for the finding. e..g if the subjects come from neurology clinics vs ENT clinics vs primayr care, the findings might be very different.

I always squirm with results like this because, not counting the issues raised above, busy thoughtless clinicians who use flow charts will translate 89 percent to 100 percent, so if youre in the minority 11 percent you are SOL of ever getting any help.
