I wonder if the AO+ bacteria was largely impacted by the introduction of Triclocarban and Triclosan which started showing up in anti-bacterial hand and bath soap in the late 60's early 70's. Both of these chemicals are in a large number of personal hygiene products now including toothpaste!

I know one of these was in the "Safeguard" brand of soap because I used it for 20 years after starting the use of it i the 70's.

The reason I stopped it when I did was there was study that one of these chemicals was thought to lower testosterone levels? I'm not sure if this was ever proven or not, but as a mid 30's male at the time I wasn't going to take any chances.

Interesting, could be @August59 Some companies started removing triclosan from their products after all of the warnings, consumer complaints and some new state and country regulations. I switched from anti-bacterial soap to a natural soap after the suoerbug issues were raised. The natural soap is the only soap that reduces (but not eliminates) hand dryness. The brand is Kiss My Face (wish there was a less-expensive alternate, but this was the only one that worked). The FDA did issue an updated warning about anti-bacterial soaps, triclosan and triclocarbon. I'm not sure what has happened since. There are also some organizations working on campaigns to get these chemicals out of our products. One such org maintains a database of which products contain which chemicals as well as articles about chemicals in our products.

Purrell does not contain triclosan, btw.
