I have an appointment for the last week in April. And when I made this appointment, the scheduler said that the doctor had asked her to tell me that he does not prescribe pain medicine on the first visit. Well fair enough. He also asked her to tell me that this visit is only to be for second opinion purposes. That I don't understand. I wasn't asking for a second opinion, only to have the injections. I couldn't help but fear that he was already hostile before I even got there. I have become so fragile from all of this that I am getting paranoid, Lol.
No not paranoid, just wise from experience.
It may just be though that they get inundated with people who are not interested in finding the best solutions for their situation but simply want pain medications and move from doctor to doctor until they find one who will give them what they want. It's hard to tell without having the appointment what his attitude will be.
I'd make it clear you've been given a diagnosis and suggested treatment but that you couldn't afford it. I'd ask him his opinion on the injections but I wouldn't ask him to give them to you. It sounds like this doctor wants to make his own conclusions about what would be best for you rather than just following what another doctor has said. That's the point of a second opinion.
Treatment options are very much a matter of opinion and doctors don't necessarily stay up to date with the latest evidence but hold to their own views very strongly nonetheless. Consulting a doctor is not like consulting an expert in other fields where we are treated as consumers buying a service and options are laid out to choose from. Some doctors will give you some choice but many will deign to choose for you and will only continue with you as a patient if you accept their plan.
