hyperparathyroidism: doc sending me to uber specialist

Hi andremarie sorry i must of overlooked your earlier post where you said your Calcium was normal (poor concentration day i guess) have they ever done any scans of your parathyroid i know there not totally acurate all the time, but can show the tumors alot of the time. Wish doctors would give us ice cream on persription he he

i haven't had scans done. doctor will go to next step if D is normal and parathyroid still high. he said he sees about fifteen cases a wk like mine. most docs don't see fifteen cases like mine ever; i really trust him. the ice cream was the nicest thing; of course i was very thin then and could eat everything and not gain an oz. to be young again. and trust me, i ate a lot of ice cream after she said that. i'm surrounded by good ice cream parlors.

Any news here? Did surgery help? It's amazing how much the symptoms overlap with cfs!!

My blood calcium levels were always normal despite the parathyroid hormone being high, but eventually a 24 hour urine collection showed that I was losing huge amounts of calcium - that was why I had a parathyroidectomy about ten years ago.

how did that make you feel? Any improvements ? Or downsides?

improvements - mood swings and violent shooting pains in arms and legs stopped, but the ME & fibro remain, plus of course there's the improvement that can't be seen including that bone density is no longer being lost

downsides - for a few months, especially just after the op,until the other parathyroids started working again, my calcium levels were fluctuating and when they were too low everything seemed to be unreal, vibrating slightly and out of focus - this was treated with soluble calcium


(I developed a large kidney stone from being left untreated so long, & do not know about my bone density as it's never been checked)
