Gut dysbiosis & autism link

Here is a series (six parts) of useful and very easy to understand presentations on the link between the gut and immune abnormailities. It mainly relates to autism but has far reaching implications for those with other illnesses and, of course, CFS/ME. There is also information on how to heal the gut. In fact, one of the presenters, Dr Campbell-McBride was able to reverse her son's autism through the "GAPS" diet.

Is gut dysbiosis a common pathway of illness development for ME/CFS and Autism?

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome' and Donna Gates, author of 'The Body Ecology Diet' talk about the importance of the gut and food with regards to autism. They discuss gut dysbiosisor the wrong gut bacteria being a significant cause of autism and other illnesses.

ME/CFS is not mentioned in the videos, however Prof Kenny De Meirleir treats ME/CFS as a gut-immune-neuro toxic disease; many of his patients have been found to have a gut dysbiosis.

Those with ME/CFS and having treatment for gut dysbiosis may find the similarities in illness pathway interesting to listen to.

Hi Snez,
There are a few doctors in the US who prescribe the GAPS diet to treat a myriad of illness, but I know that Dr. Cowan of San Francisco prescribes it often for "chronic fatigue"/CFS. His book, The Four Folds Path to Healing has a section on CFS/CF? and it follows Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions "diet," but I know that he prescribes the more-restrictive GAPS diet as the usual course of treatment. His descriptions of CF/CFS are in line with the symptoms that define CFS, but I've never heard him talk about treating someone who was bedbound or homebound, though he certainly may have. And, in cases of CF/CFS, I believe he treats usually only with GAPS (no supplements, meds, etc.).

I'm using both Nourishing Traditions and GAPS in my diet, but decided not to do the full GAPS diet since it is a minimum of 2 years and very strict. I'm waiting to see how someone I know fairs on it and perhaps I'll reconsider. Gut and Psychology Syndrome probably has the best description I've ever read of dysbiosis, 'leaky gut' and how the immune system is involved. I think that book is pretty invaluable!

Thanks for your input Zoe,

I have followed quite a strict diet for the last 16 months. It is partially based on Gaps and on the Primal diet - lots of fat, meat, vegetables and ferments. I have found the total elimination of grains and dairy to be very beneficial in healing my gut (I had severe problems) and went from a functional capacity of 5% to 80%, as of now. This is in conjunction with supplements, naturopath guidance and osteopath appointments- as I found the diet needed the augementation of other modalities to address the severity of this disease.

I have read Nourishing Traditions and know of Dr Cowan and his book. I think these approaches are all on the right path as to gut healing.

Like you, I also highly recommend Gut and Psychology Syndrome by By Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.

Fascinating

I do want to read more. Never heard of these folks before... but because of a diagnosis of celiac, I have been rigidly staying away from gluten. On an EGD, my intestinal villa were blunted.

Too tired to put any thoughts together here, just wanted to thank you for posting this, I found the clips very interesting.
