GERD or ACID REFLUX and Who Should I go and See?

Lately, I have been having a burning sensation in my throat/esophagus. I think I developed heart burn with acid reflux from my CFS-ME, unless its just a coincidence. Any one else have this ?

Do you think I should visit an ENT (ear nose throat) specialist or a gastroenterologist (GI) specialist?

As far as I can tell, this can be a fairly typical issue. I spent quite a bit of time with a gastroenterologist to no avail. Not necessarily discouraging you from seeing a specialist but don't be surprised if they say that they can't find anything wrong.

i just want them to take a scope, stick it down my throat, and rip a piece off the study under the microscope.

Hi, SaveMe.

Pain in my esophagus was one of my early problems. As floyd said, this seems to be common.

So this was in the late 1960s when I was first diagnosed with esophagitis using a barium test. The doctor prescribed some liquid to coat the esophagus. I can't remember what it was. He also said to drink milkshakes.

I had the problem off and on for years. In 1990, when I finally got a diagnosis of CFS, that doctor said that the pain in my esophagus was a candida infection. He put me on a yeast-free diet. I discovered that when I avoided sweets the problem went away. Also vinegar made the problem worse.

I don't know if this information will be useful to you, but you might start with a change in diet to see if that helps. Need to change to diet is very common, although different people report relief of symptoms by eliminating different foods.

This has also been my experience with the gastroenterologists.

I have a great gastroenterologist...had burning behind my chest that was severe and very painful. He did a scope and found minor inflammation associated with GERD. I also was diagnosed with a moderate sized sliding hiatial hernia which can cause me alot of pain right below my ribs in the center. They found that by me drinking a fizzy liquid and x-ray as I was swallowing it. Hiatial hernia can cause similar symptoms but I mostly get severe pain when mine is bothering me.

He didn't hesitate to put me on nexium to help heal my esophagus but warned me to limit anything that could aggreviate it. I am sure you will get to know what will kick it off and what doesn't. Mine has been under control for years and most of the time I don't need to take nexium.
If I ever get a bad attack I go back to him to have it scoped because there is a higher incidence of esophagus cancer with this so it is a serious problem.
