First Microsized, Injectable Wireless Device for Chronic Pain to Hit the U.S. Market

The FDA has cleared for marketing the first wireless, microtechnology neuromodulation device for chronic back and leg pain, the manufacturer announced this week.
With the Stimwave Freedom Spinal Cord Stimulation System, an injectable microchip device delivers pulses of energy to electrodes near surrounding nerves, which ultimately allows the brain to reroute specific pain signals and thereby offer pain relief. The device is small enough to be implanted through a standard needle during an outpatient procedure.
The system, which is MRI compatible, is currently sold in Europe and will hit U.S. markets in January 2015.
