I don't think she really believed I'm disabled and sick when she forced me into trying to explain my situation The vet herself ended up having to talk to the receptionist who then ended up phoning back and apologising to me.
Tania, I had a similar experience with a vet office when they called to see if I was available for a follow-up appt for my dog b/c they had a cancelation open up (this was much earlier this year). I was just barely driving again and I was not physically strong enough to lift my dog into the car without assistance and I was not going to risk dropping her b/c she had back surgery!
I asked this vet office if they could hold the appt for just 15 min for me while I called a family member or friend to see if they could drive us. The woman said that they could not hold the appt and that I needed to give her an answer that minute (which was ridiculous IMO). I started to explain my situation and the woman said, "Can't your mom drive you?" and I said, "My mom passed away".
That led her to apologize and realize that her question was inappropriate and intrusive (re: my mom!) but she still would not hold the appt for 15 min while I called to see if someone could carry my dog and drive us. She said, "If you can get her here, we can help you from the car". I explained AGAIN that I needed help getting her into the car and that I had multiple people who could help me but I needed to call and ask them if they were free on that particular date and time.
Ultimately, she refused and I gave up and waited another two months for our original appt and did not take the cancelation. I really felt they had discriminated against me but it was so minor in the overall scheme of things that I had to let it go. The only thing I can say is that we have to choose our battles when we are ill and have limited time and resources to work with. It is very frustrating though!
