Diagnostic clue: felt great after colonoscopy prep

My main reasons for being on this site are peripheral neuropathy and presumed neuroinflammation causing brain fog and fatigue. I did a full colonoscopy prep (~40 hour fast, miralax + magnesium citrate to flush colon) and felt incredible on the day of the colonoscopy and for about 24 hours after.

What organs/symptoms are implicated by this observation? The following considerations are all that come to mind for me:

- Food-related inflammation in my colon causing problems along the gut-brain axis and resulting in neuroinflammation (they found inflammation in my colon during the colonoscopy)
- Some sort of intestinal permeability
- Could it be that the cleanse lowered the toll on my organs, such as liver or kidneys, which are at the root of my systemic inflammation?

All remarks and insights would be much appreciated, thank you

I'm sure another member reported a similar experience recently.

If your symptoms came back fairly quickly then it's a possibility. Another thing to consider would be an infection. So the colon flush partly removes what is causing the infection.

I'm just guessing that toxins or various metabolites would have a longer period of change. You might feel gradually better and then gradually worse over a space of days.

Did you try supplemental magnesium before this? Some people report benefits from magnesium, and some are specific about the form (citrate, oxide, whatever else). I assume that the colon flush counts as high-dosage Mg.

If not the Mg, I'd guess a change in the microbiome or the intestinal walls. Another possibility is changes in the neural feedback to/from the gut. If there's a problem with that feedback, a dramatic change in intestinal content might temporarily override the problem.

Welcome,

Like you stated, I’ve also had three instances over the years, where I had a significant improvement from a colonoscopy prep. However, all were temporary.

I’ve also had temporary, but significant, improvement from antibiotics and antidepressants at times. Both of which can alter gut microbiome.

Most of my illness revolves around digestive issues. Do you have any as well? If you were having a colonoscopy, perhaps you do.

Regardless, I am looking at the theory of gut dysbiosis/ overgrowth as a cause of illness for some of us.
And I believe it could be possible even without major digestive symptoms. Take a look at the following story...

https://www.healthrising.org/blog/2...thers-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-xifaxin-story/

The thought, or theory, is that an overgrowth/ dysbiosis is producing organic acids, lipopolysaccharides, or other toxic byproducts that are finding there way into the body. This could create any number of symptoms. Described better here...

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-42286-8
https://selfhacked.com/blog/lipopolysaccharides/

Again, all this is theory/ speculation on my part, and isn’t going to apply to everyone. There are several other postings here on this subject, take a look and comment back if you think this could be a factor for you. I’m looking for answers, just like you are.

You folks may be interested in the post that came out today re: Long Haul Syndrome and secondary pellagra. It came out yesterday under the heading of the NIH & secondary symptoms. There are two videos, be warned that some re-winding will be involved, but it's worthwhile to see the results.

Also note that apparently Dr. Ron Davis is working on something very similar to these findings. Yours, Lenora.

Update: benefits of the colonoscopy prep gradually disappeared over the following days... back to baseline 3-4 days later. Doesn't negate any of my initial thoughts -- seems like the key to a cure in my case is plausibly centered in the gut. Gonna get one of those comprehensive blood/urine/stool sequencing tests to see if there are possibly pathogens in my gut... other than that, gonna try to fast without doing the colon purge, then I'll do the colon purge without fasting and see which provides more relief. Lots of trial and error going forward

Anyone know of a good gut specialist in the US who may be able to help me go down this investigatory path?

Hello @aquariusgirl......I don't know anything about Dr. Davis and his investigation into pellagra (if there has been one).

I can only tell people that pellagra has been common for centuries, often after viral outbreaks and is caused by a deficiency of niacin (not the non-flushing type). I wouldn't overdo the amount of niacin taken, if you aren't getting it from your foods, that is.

I hope someone else on here knows, but I don't. Sorry! Yours, Lenora.

See, that's where my mind is! I'm the one who actually signed the statement and yet I can't remember anything about it. Sorry. Yours, Lenora.
