Unfortunately Avelox is not a mild antibiotic. It is similar to levquin, a fluoroquinolone. Many members have reported very negative symptoms form this class of antibiotics and some have claimed their CFS/ME started with use of this class of antibiotics. I would strongly consider asking your doctor to switch to a different class of antibiotic since there isn't a culture which says this is the only antibiotic that should work.

I have not read the whole thread but Avelox is a very dangerous FQ antibiotic and I would ask for an alternative (unless you are allergic to all other classes of ABX and for some reason there is no alternative). You don't want FQ neurotoxic damage or tendon injuries, etc, if you can avoid it.

I was very surprised to find out this antibiotic had fluoroquinolone. I go to such measures, never use a florine tooth paste, I used borax last year for 3 months etc. Now I'm given the fluorine in medicine! No wonder I'm suicidal.

The worst effect is depression. I never suffered from it. It feels very chemical, not at all related to emotions etc. It appears roughly 1 hour after I take the medicine. Stays for 1-2 hours then a huge emptiness I mean energywise. Then I take some CBD oil and lie down I'm fine after 2 more hours. I feel it's all gone. I had a lot of nausea in the beginning but that disappeared. Maybe this was the pneumonia not the medicine.

I don't know what to do, its weekend now, I don't think I can call the dr. Besides I'm in a different city now. I was staying at mum's when pneumonia started. Its public holiday on monday and Tuesday is the last dose.

Should I stop avelox? I have no means to get another antibiotic at weekend unless I go to A&E. Which I hate. Or should I just bite the bullet and finish the course.

Hi Erin,

I doubt your reaction to this antibiotic is from the fluoride, but rather from the class of antibiotic.

I would call your doctor today , usually there would be a doctor covering the practice who should be able to help you if your physician is unavailable. I wouldn't stop the antibiotic without speaking to someone who is familiar with your problem. In the USA, we have urgent care centers where a doctor is always available. If you has something similar in your city, maybe consider this as an option.

FQ antibiotics can cause psychiatric symptoms and suicidal ideation in people with no prior psych history. I agree with @Butydoc above. I would not stop the ABX without speaking to your physician but I would request an alternative asap (if it was me).

I had no access to the dr prescribed avelox through the weekend, I continued taking it. Today was my last dose.
Yesterday and this morning I felt really good. Then I tidied kitchen a bit now I feel back to horrid state. Sore when breathing and caughing again. How stupid of me, I'm frightened now. Am I ever gonna get better?

Dr had said rest but not lying all the time.
How long will it take to recover? Should I be in bed all the time? Until when?
Any ideas?

You're absolutely right. Fluoroquinolones have seriously destroyed lives and imo should only been taken as a last resort.

Thanks for asking @Little Bluestem, I'm not too bad. I went to a specialist for a check up yesterday. She gave me a scan and pneumonia is now cleared. I felt much better and this scan is a proof.

However, I feel incredibly fatigued. I mean my normal ME fatigue is multiplied by 10! I'm good in the mornings (which never been the case before) then get so fatigued, to the point of almost paralysis that I have to go to bed for few hours around 4-5 pm. Then this give me a little strength for few more hours. I have to go to bed by 10'ish at night. I sleep 10 hours until morning. Definitely completely house bound and semi bed bound now.

Depression was away as soon as I finish the antibiotic, gut is not damaged so much I used probiotics. I also started to take borax last week regularly, continue with CBD oil as usual.

The only problem I have is pain down my left hip bone or side. This is a new thing don't think related to pneumonia or the antibiotics. Possibly due to lying too much.
