Denied Disability in Canada, not sure what to do?

I would not go in wide a wake and perky. But I never had to do this, just from what others have reported and how it didn't work out for them.

We get back to the finding a doc who treats me. Not so easy

I was denied CPP when I first applied through an M.E specialist. I received a letter stating I was capable of 'gainful employment". My doctor explained to me that sometimes they deny it the first time around. I was so upset I called Health Canada and spoke to the judicator who denied my application to ask how she came to her decision. Her response was to appeal it and suggested I apply for social disability welfare. I told her I qualify for CPP and we will appeal it! We appealed and I was accepted.

I agree with Minkeygirl, leave your optimism and positive thinking at the door.

You have to go in assuming you will be denied. Particularly if it's private disability. Do everything you can to show how sick you are not how much you can do.

There was a piece on 60 Minutes (American news show) a few years ago. An ophthalmic surgeon was denied disability by UNUN (the worst of the worst) because they said he could work. He had MS.

Are you aware of any such program in Ontario?

I think the following is what I used while living in Toronto.

http://health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/drugs/programs/odb/opdp_trillium.aspx

RAMQ, in Quebec, covers my costs completely because I don't have an income, and receive assistance. Those with an income pay a modest amount, and I think it maxes out at about $75. Also you can get more expensive drugs that aren't on the list if your doctor fills out a form.

I thought you were insured.

Thanks I'll check out the link. I am insured for partial drug coverage through my employer. I'm still technically employed by the company so my benefits continue. But they will cease once I'm no longer officially employed by them anymore. Which unless there is a miracle in my return to health, will be sooner or later.

Benefits while on LTD, at least in my case in BC are shared responsibilities between the employer and me. So I pay half.
If you have a union, do make sure they are involved in your LTD case. They can be tremendous help. Do not attend a work related meeting without a union rep. Your employer is not your friend.

Thank you. My situation is slightly different as I was in sales for a large company. My employers have been very supportive of my illness and need to file for LTD. I guess I'm lucky for that in a way. My LTD case has not been resolved yet.

While this all sounds ominous and awful, I appreciate your candour. I won't be applying for a little while yet but I'll take all of this into account when I do. And I may look in on you guys with more specific questions when the time comes. Thanks so much. I

Of course, everybody is different @Ilan. What is described in this thread represents many personal accounts of what's happened to them. In general, dealing with a claim is not a walk in the park, is all, but when it is what needs to be done, so be it. We will be here for support when time comes.

Sending best wishes.
