“B-cells are supposed to mutate. That’s what they do. Occasionally, they are going to make mistakes that get approved by the T-cells.”
Maybe this explains why some of became ill during/after a severe 'flu'. There would have been a lot of B-cell mutation going on then which would have increased the chance of a mistake.

No, that is a misinterpretation. Bcells undergo the same evolutionary process whether its the common cold or a bad flu. They don't mutate more because of a flu. It isn't "harder" for them to develop antibodies to flu than other pathogens.
