Any research showing the biology behind prolonged relapses?

This is something I struggle with. I seem to have at least once a year sometimes twice, where I go way downhill and feel awful for up to 3-4 months. I'm guilty of probably over doing it when I am going through a good phase with walking & exercise. It's difficult because a little exercise every now and then seems to make me feel better in the short run.

Is there any immune or inflammation markers/studies out there that show anything that could maybe explain a long relapse?

@Belbyr I ahve the same happen every single fall and a mini crash on spring. I spend live rehabbing myself back to base line. The worst the crash on the fall the harder to get out. I have it down to a science now!!!!
