Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone here is living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as well as ME/CFS?
I first developed OCD at 16, so long before any ME symptoms. I have not had treatment and have mostly kept it a secret. Luckily, it has remained mild--moderate and has never got severe. At its worst, I could spend 15-20 minutes repeating an action/compulsion (and possibily counting) until it felt 'right', and this could happen many times over the course of a day.
I am a firm believer that illnesses do not exist on their own, and that ultimately that different bodily systems are intrinsically connected at almost every level. I have pondered whether my OCD is in some way connected to my ME; for example, did OCD lead to structural or chemical changes in the brain that made me susceptible to ME?
I am intrigued to see that ME and OCD have been linked indirectly by Naviaux in his cell-danger hypothesis:
'According to Dr. Naviaux, “ASD and ME/CFS are on the same biological spectrum.” Dr. Naviaux has encountered teenagers with ASD who develop ME/CFS, and adults with ME/CFS who develop autism-like symptoms of mutism, social withdrawal, sensory hypersensitivities, and OCD-like symptoms.' https://www.omf.ngo/2017/10/19/treating-autism-and-mecfs-could-one-drug-do-both/
I'm fairly cetain I am not on the autistic spectrum, however, I know I have several autistic characteristics including some social withdrawal, sensory hypersensitivities, and the OCD.
I am not well read on Dr Naviaux's theory - maybe it's something to read into further.
