Hi

I'm due to go to hospital for one night stay. The procedure is camera and biopsy of the uterus. This will be done under anesthesia ( I need to find out if it's full knock out or more twilight?

I would like to ask the community on things they've done to prepare such as vitamins / supplements.
Any specific articles on m. E / cfs and anesthesia?

I'm looking for prep only no scare stories please..

Hi, @Emmarose47

I don't have any words of wisdom about preparing for anesthesia, but I did want to share with you that I had this procedure in 2021.

My gynecologist, who I trust and respect, said that the procedure required general anesthesia, but perhaps that's because we needed to remove two large endometrial polyps at the same time.

I was in a terrible state of health prior to the surgery and told my gynecologist I was worried about the toll it was going to take on me, but he encouraged me to go through with the procedure and I'm glad I did.

I finally got relief from excessive bleeding and excruciating cramps, which were depleting me more than I realized.

I hope I haven't said more than you wanted to know! My intention is to be supportive.

I will be following this thread to see if I can pick up some tips from others about coping with general anesthesia.

Hi zebra good to hear your good experience...
Yes it's a thing isn't it weighing up a procedure and PEM / potentially declining further..
I've been debating it for a while but my intuition keeps saying the same... Go.

What was your recovery like?

Ooh thank u! Sunshine ! Lovely ☀️

I hadn't heard from the hospital re date and so I didn't ask for need of dealing with flare and the mental / emotional tornado.
They are calling me today. I originally said leave it until mid May so my I could be going in like pronto..
Grateful I've stabilised as well as I did after the tsunami of last yr and moving. My house is now a home and I've got to build relationships with nice neighbours. Not bad for a housebound half bed bound gal.

I'm actually looking forward to going into hospital for the care. The ward is nice and with good nurses. I get to press a buzzer when I want assistance I mean hum we don't get that in our everyday life hey!

Still it is concerning and then of course they'll be results .. At least it will be done. This has been going on since August last yr.

Grateful for it all every bit of care, support and nice person that Grace's our lives. Some arnt so fortunate.

What was your recovery like

Hi, @Emmarose47

I'm sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. Rather than rely on my memory, I dug up my symptom journal and my day planner from 2021.

The good stuff:

*I had some bleeding and cramping for a few days afterward, but I was able to manage the discomfort with just Tylenol. Yay!

*I was able to leave the house about 2 weeks after the procedure, which is pretty remarkable I think! I'm not saying I felt great, but I was physically able to leave the house to attend a meeting, which was surprising.

The not so great stuff:

*I seem to have a paradoxical reaction to anesthesia, and I barely slept for 3 nights after the surgery. I was totally wired. Honestly, it was awful. I am told this is an unusual reaction, so it probably won't happen to you!

*My doctor required a post-op appointment to make sure I was healing. This is certainly NOT a bad thing, but it was another trip out of the house, another pelvic exam, etc., so just be sure to rest up for it!

I wish you ALL THE BEST as you undergo this hospitalization and procedure. I'll be thinking of you, and I hope you let us know how it goes.

When it's said nil by mouth can sips of water be taken?
Not unless they tell you it is OK. I just had general anesthesia and I was allowed only one small sip of water in order to take a med they had ordered. The risk is aspiration as your normal protections against it are turned off by anesthesia. By the way, I am 2 weeks out from the procedure and while I have needed to aggressively rest, recovery is going well and I’m sure that I will be back to “normal” in a few weeks.

Same thing happened to me—I suspect that it is the Dysautonomia aspect that causes this. Two weeks later and sleep is just getting back to pre-surgery levels. My situation was complicated by having to fly out-of-state and into a different time zone for the procedure.

Went for the pre op appoint today with the nurse ( who was v nice and thorough.
First time out since Jan was scared of going out in the community - noise, traffic, peope etc. It's interesting when I go out as I realise what I don't miss!
But I am in a city ( I live on the edge) and it had got more populated these last yrs .
Also there is sooo much concrete!! New build high rises ++ 🏢

So from the appointment I asked if there were more options than having a general anaesthetic turns out I can have local around the spine to numb the lower regions.
I have phone a point next wk to speak to anaethatist explore my options weigh up the risks etc.
At this point I'm for it. ✨

So night time here now..
Been v fearful of this next flare up and coping with it mentally / emotionally.
Hasn't happened yet and what I've learnt is the bigger exertions can delay for 5 days.
Prayers 🙏 for an easier tornado than last time and I'll be well enough for the actual procedure...

Just for today hey...
Good night from the UK 🇬🇧✨

So when I had a colonoscopy they did a "twilight sleep" anesthesia. I don't remember the name of the med and I was a lot younger then. I had ME then too...just didn't know what it was called. Anyway, the anesthesia turned out okay. I came home afterward and took a nap and that nap was so nice.

Saying all that to say, I wonder if that might be an option. Of course, we all react differently so maybe it still could be problematic for you.

Praying for you to come through the procedure okay.
So glad they are offering you anesthesia. I had an an endometrial biopsy about 5 months ago.
They did not offer anesthesia for it so I asked for lidocaine at least. It was supposed to be applied rather than injected. The doctor did an injection. At least they had run out of the lidocaine with the epinephrine. This she told me after the injection. Yikes. I do not do well with epinephrine so glad they had run out.

Anyway, the injected lidocaine didn't really help so again, I'm very glad they are offering you something. I mentioned the "twilight sleep" med just in case that could be an option for you. ???
