Ammonia

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I’ve been reading on here for years so this is kind of an iconic moment, haha. I have Lyme disease and ME and have been bedridden for quite some years. My main problems seem to be with detoxing, whatever I take (glutathione, binders, etc.), everything makes me sicker and I’m not able to tolerate these supplements in normal dosages. In the last few months some particular symptoms (what I now know very probably high ammonia symptoms) started getting worse and worse. I have all symptoms of high ammonia (immense pressure on the head and eyes, blurred vision, insomnia, difficulty breathing at times, anxiety, seizure like episodes, dizziness, nausea, accompanied by tachycardia and a lot of thirst at times). I’m awaiting my blood test results now. I do know that I always have low urea in my blood. The symptoms are bad and unbearable at the moment. I tried l-ornithine (250 mg) yesterday. I first got a weird reaction from it, where these symptoms were amplified for half an hour after taking it. After that I’ve felt the best and the most calm I’ve felt since days. But a few hours later the high ammonia symptoms came back already and I got a lot of detox symptoms and only got a lot sicker. I saw that l-ornithine is also part of phase 2 detox. I’ve read that a lot of people can’t tolerate l-ornithine, and some good doctors don’t advise against it because of the possible heavy side effects. Others seem to do great with it. I can definitely not take it, at least not right now. Does anyone have experience with other supplements against ammonia? I want to be very careful and not take anything that might put a strain on the liver because my liver enzymes are a little elevated. I’ll try lactulose, just because it’s so bad I have to do something, but I’m not happy to take it because I also have IBS and lactulose can make that worse. I’m also paying attention to my diet by limiting protein intake. I’m still determining if I might have a sulfur problem but I seem to react bad to high sulfur foods so I’m not eating them at the moment and I take a low dose molybdenum. I do have heterozygous CBS snps, a lot of NOS snps, and some OTC snps (this is regarding ortnithine).

I’m very curious to hear if some of you also have had these problems and experiences and I would like to hear your stores about this. Thank you in advance! :)

I recently interviewed Sarah Price Hancock - her (incredibly compelling) long story short is that she had very high ammonia ("my brain was marinating in it") and what helped her was a long course of antifungals (she needed for 18 months) plus nutrient support.

Fwiw, she said Dr John Humiston (CandidaMD.com) was the one who finally figured it out and helped her immensely after many years of being very sick (including voices in her head 24/7 telling her how and why to kill herself stopped in 3 days).

Hi Teun,

I had very high ammonia when I first started using methylation protocols. I had to take high dose molybdenum for years. At times I was taking 6 mg (6000 mcg) per day to keep up with the glutamate, sulphites, and ammonia. If you have high ammonia, you also likely have very high toxic metals particularly mercury. Mercury can displace molybdenum and zinc in key enzymes so that also raises the need for molybdenum. Molybdenum has very short half life as well and is cleared from the blood in about 3 hours. I also used vitamin C, zinc and magnesium to help. Like you, I couldn't tolerate arginine or ornithine. I found out I had homozygous SNPS for MTHFR 1298 which combined with my CBS mutation and others was what was causing my high ammonia. MTHFR 1298 is responsible for BH4 synthesis which is required for ammonia detoxification. Now that I am using Freddd's protocol (advanced methylation protocol) and taking high dose l-methylfolate and methyl-b12 I don't have this issue any more as I am making plenty of BH4 now. I would look into the simplified methylation protocol (Rich VanK). You might have success with hydroxocobalamin (B12) as well for ammonia but eventually you'll have to sort out your methylation pathways as this is key to reducing ammonia. You might also want to look at TMG, it might also help with your methylation and detoxification.
