I was hoping that maybe a bleach wash would be sufficient for making produce safe to eat, but no such luck.

Bummer and that is scary if you cannot even kill it with bleach

Here's a video showing how easy it is to grow lettuce in a South-facing window. I like to add a fluorescent fixture and lengthen the shorter winter days.
