URGENT! Write to your MP NOW
Posted by Jane on 27/01/2012
We have recently found out that the government intends to debate the Welfare Reform Bill on Wednesday 1 February and to seek to overturn the Lords amendments on that day.
We all need to write to your MPs to encourage them to vote to retain the amendments voted through in the Lords and not to allow the government to use financial privilege to overturn the will of the House of Lords. In my experience, many MPs use part of their weekend to catch up on email correspondence, so could I encourage you to send your letter/email to your MP straight away (downloadable templates below).
Email addresses for MPs can be found at http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/
To find out if your MP (especially if he or she is Conservative or Liberal Democrat) is likely to rebel and therefore might be more open to persuasion, see the MPs rebellion rates at http://www.publicwhip.org.uk/mps.php?sort=rebellions
To find out more about your MP, their voting record, participation in debates etc see http://www.theyworkforyou.com/
If you receive ESA, you can find out what benefits youre entitled to and therefore how you may be affected by the Lords amendments at https://www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx If you fill in the calculator as if you dont get ESA, youll have an idea of how you will be affected by the withdrawal of ESA after a year.
Please tweet and retweet this page and help people you know who arent online to do letters! Thanks
The small Spartacus team has quickly pulled together some suggested template letters for you to adapt to your own situation. There are slightly different templates suggested, depending on whether your MP is Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrat if your MP comes from a minor party we suggest you use the letter designed for Labour MPs, as they are not in government.
Please personalise your letter, particularly in the places where we have indicated that your personal story may be relevant. We have simply provided the templates to make it easier for you to do your email or letter.
Conservative MP letter re Lords WRB amendments - the aim here is to try to get them to understand the facts and thus persuade them to defy the party whip
Labour MP letter re Lords WRB amendments - the aim here is to encourage them to turn up and add their vote to all the opposition votes to make it more likely the government is defeated
LibDem MP letter re Lords WRB amendments - the aim here is to persuade Liberal Democrat MPs to vote according to the resolution passed by the party at conference and against the government
These template letters are also available in the Help with Letters section of this website
