Trying the Methylation Protcol for the second time

Hey all,

I did freddds methylation protocol back in August 2012, which is about a 2 months after coming down with cfs. I did it for about 2.5 months and experienced a lot of benefits, but by the end of the 2.5 months started to feel very weak/no energy to the point that I was struggling to use my breathing muscles. When I look back now I think it could have been an increased need for potassium even though I was drinking a lot of coconut water at the time too. Or it cou;ld have been due to mercury chelation from the Alpha lipoic acid I was also taking at the time. I didn't know anything about amalgam illness/ chelation last year. I stopped all supplements cold turkey and began recovering and by november/december It was like I never had cfs. I think my partial methylation black had been lifted those two months. Actually I didn't think it was cfs at the time but a severe b12 deficiency.

Come Jan 2013-present I have been up and down struggling seeing a couple specialist here and there, finding many abnormal findings with immune systemm, heavy metal, infection, etc. Diagnosed with CFS/FIBRO.

Now that I understand a lot more than last year I think it's time for me to try the methylation protcol again before I tackle my heavy metals and infections.

Right now my current condition is HOUSEBOUND/BEDBOUND(somedays)
Main Symptoms include:

Diarrhea with abdominbal pain
Headaches
Ears ringing
fascilations
dizziness
vertigo
blurry vision
low energy
shortness of breath
wake up many times during sleep
anxiety
post exhertional malaise
neuropathy(pins and needles/ loss of sensations)
Fat and acidic food intolerance

I am gonna keep my progress on this thread and hopefully can cross each starting symptom off as the months go by.
I am going to go much slower with dosing and not go up to megadoses. I am aware of potassium deficit this time around and will not include the ALA.

Here is my nutreval and 23andme snps. If anyone has any tips or suggestions I will gladly listen.

Just off the top of my head, you have digestive symptoms and have a Bacterial Dysbiosis marker, so #1, I would get some stool testing done and see what's going on there. I have links to the right stool tests and also the 4R Gut Rebuilding Program in my signature.

Also your mercury is high indicating current mercury exposure. If you have all your fillings out, this could be detox. If not, there could be another source of mercury.

I'm impressed by how clean your SNPs are, except for a few MTRRs and the BHMTs. In that case, I think your main problem is the mercury, as mercury will mess up MTHFR and MTR just as bad as if you had SNPs there.

You can see where succinic acid is killed in your Kreb's cycle, and that mercury can cause this.

Yes, be sure to Start Low and Go Slow. Just doing methylation and killing off any bad stomach bugs will cause metal detox. You don't need to add ALA or anything else to the mix. If you start experiencing metal detox symptoms, then back off until those disappear. You'll still be detoxing, just at a lower level.

Ask Yasko is fond of saying, this is a marathon, not a sprint. So you'll want to be comfortable while you're detoxing as this could take a long time.

As an example, I get metal detox symptoms with anything over 100mcg methylfolate and 55mcg methylcobalamin, so I keep my supps below that.

If you haven't seen it already, check out the Nutreval Interpretation Guide. The link is in my signature.

You have a lot of low vitamins ... have you been tested for celiac and such? B12 might be a bit low due to your MTRR A66G mutation. Fixing that also might help with folate levels.

You also have low vanilmandelic acid, which can be the result of low norepinephrine and/or epinephrine.

Have you been supplementing cysteine? It's quite odd to see both that and cystathionine elevated.

Elevated 3-methylhistidine indicates that you are breaking down protein (muscle), possibly as a fuel source.

Elevated sarcosine could be the result of your low folate levels.

Based on your results, you might be having a pretty typical reaction to the upregulation of the ADRA2A gene. Recent research (discussed here on PR) has shown that a gene gets upregulated in ME patients after exertion, which can cause PEM symptoms, suppression of lipolysis, low magnesium (which accounts for your muscle twitches, etc), and decreased norepinephrine levels. But this should also cause reduced gut motility, which is at odds with your diarrhea.

Anyhow, you have the PEM symptoms, indications of low norepinephrine (low vanilmandelic acid, and OI), and indications of impaired lipolysis, since your body is trying to break down proteins when it should be breaking down fats if it could.

If you also have low blood pressure and/or pulse pressure when upright too long (like when you start feeling extra crappy), then it might be worthwhile to try to suppress the expression of that gene. Low doses (100mg or less?) of Yohimbe might work, which is cheap and available over the counter in the USA. But it's best to talk to a doctor about it first if you can, and it might be a bad idea if you have elevated blood pressure.

Also, BFG - regarding your mercury levels. If you go to https://www.23andme.com/you/explorer/gene/?gene_name=GSTT1 and https://www.23andme.com/you/explorer/gene/?gene_name=GSTM1 (you need to log in there), it'll show if you have most or all of your results for either gene as "no call".

These genes have been shown to have some involvement in detoxing mercury. Hence if you're missing them entirely (it's not that uncommon), you may need to be especially careful about avoiding mercury and some other substances. A detox alone wouldn't be enough stop the problem from coming back.

I had the metametrix gi effects 2100 done, but don't know if my results show dysbiosis. Here are my results:
DSC00662.JPGDSC00663.JPGDSC00664.JPGDSC00666.JPGDSC00667.JPG
The weird thing is that I had two h pylori EIA stool antigen test and both were negative whereas the metametrix was positive, so I don't know what's going on there. My doctor rx me the Prevpac, but didn't take it due to horror stories.

I still have 4 amalgam fillings that need to be replaced. I think my merucry exposure was from eating a lot of fish at the time. I do not eat fish anymore though.

Caledonia what does metal detox symptoms feel like? Everytime I take an antifungal herb/garlic and get a really bad herx and need to stop. I wonder if this is releasing metals?
Have you had any success yourself with any chelation protocol for mercury ? Right now it looks like the Cutler protocol with the ALA every 3 hrs and/or Chris shade protocol seems the safest route.

I had the celiac antigen test which was negative, but I do suspect some sort of villous atrophy that is contributing to my ill health. I say this because the only thing that stops my diarrhea every time is Lamb bone broth, which is very healing for the gi tract. Beef bone is good too, but I found not as good as the lamb bones. I just don't know what is causing it.

I am not supplementing cysteine, but I do eat a diet very high in sulfur containing foods, cabbage, garlic, onions. I read from cutler and yasko that in some people a diet in sulfur is not good, but I think I am fine with these foods and if I cut them out I am not sure what to eat without losing weight.

My GSTT1 genes are no call, but my GSTM1 are not.

I may need to get my amalgams out sooner than later. I am also a grinder when I sleep, which doesnt help at all.

So I have been using the transdermal b complex at low doses and taking sub mb12 at 2000mcg for a few days with no problems. Yesterday I added in 200 mcg of methylfolate and 250mcg adenob12 both in the same sublingual and felt okay nothing too bad, but a couple hours later felt really bad anxiety, worseing fatigue, and labored breathing. I think this feels familiar and might be potassium def symptoms. Today did not take the adeno and mfolate, but the b complex and b12 and felt the symptoms come back when I added the b12. I thinking of potassium gluconate, but don't know beacuse it is advised against for people who have dehydration and stomach ulcer, which I feel like I have.

Found this website for anyone thinking about potassium gluconate and what you need to know:
http://www.sanfordhealth.org/HealthInformation/Healthwise/Topic/d03789a1

I had a metabolic panel a month ago and my serum potassium was 3.5 is this indicative of low intracellular potassium?

Valentijn,

Could you explain this a bit more? I am all "no call" on that first batch.

Big thanks!

About 15% of Europeans (and a good chunk from other regions) are entirely missing their GSTT1 gene. It's used in detoxing certain toxins, such as mercury and the byproducts of acetaminophen, amitriptyline, and rituximab. And probably some other things as well.
