This is a very interesting article about how viral infections affect muscle health by affecting the OXTR/pERK pathway. It raises the question whether this is a potential mechanism that is responsible for prominent muscle symptoms in ME/CFS patients. I also wonder whether ME/CFS patients have a particularly genetic vulnerability as it relates to this pathway.
Alterations in OXTR/pERK pathway "may play a less direct role in decreasing the health and regeneration of skeletal muscle, bone, brain-psychological well-being and inducing obesity by skewing key cell signaling networks that regulate homeostatic tissue maintenance".
