Struggling after Steroids 7 months ago. Adrenal Glandular? / Other ideas?

Hi Guys,

I was prescribed a 4 day course of prednisolone back in mid November.

I'm mostly bedbound anyway but have had to move to 2:1 rest to activity ratio since the steroids. Before it was 1:1. Recently I was prescribed some anti inflammatory eye drops and after taking them for only 3 days, one time a day, was overcharged for 6 days and have been struggling a lot since, so for last 3 weeks. I've had to move to a 3:1 rest to activity ratio and sometimes even 4:1.

I just wondered if anyone had any ideas, if you've had similar experiences and whether people who are sensitive to everything have had any success with adrenal Glandular or others adrenal supports (as I think the steroids have further messed up my adrenals.) or anything else for that matter?

Post steroids I've become really sensitive to milk chocolate which has started to act as a stimulant even if I have pretty small amounts. It helped me do one or two things in Jan, Feb and March but have tended to avoid it since then.

Anyway, I would appreciate hearing from you if you've got any helpful thoughts or ideas

Thanks,

Kes

About two to three years ago, I started becoming gradually reactive to almost everything and had to limit my diet to 3 foods and water.

It was .... unpleasant. Things I'd eaten or cooked with all my life suddenly produced everything from nausea to a misery of panic/anxiety attacks that would last for a full day .... well, 19 hours, about the same thing .... and severely limited my ability to think, move or sleep.

I started experimenting wildly with anything I could dig up that seemed to show promise, with extremely limited, but mostly poor, results.

I wish I'd kept better notes, or in some cases any, but as I recall I first tried theanine which was disastrous, then decaf green tea, a total bust, then Suntheanine, also terrible, then tyrosine, not good, then gelatin to increase my aminos given my poor diet, which was also disastrous, then a bunch of stuff I don;t remember because much of that horrible time is a haze.

I think things started turning around after I'd read some research on NMDA, glutamate excitotoxicity, GABAa and b receptors, and then more research on what could reverse those hyper-sensitivities. After a long time toiling thru dense and hard to translate research papers (scientists like to speak in science-ese, which is almost a foreign language without proper training), I slowly came to the conclusion that maybe magnesium was the answer and after a shite-load more research, I settled on a type (may glycinate, in spite of the reactivity to glycine), then a dosage (this required a lot of faith and a whole lot of experimenting), then I just dove in and worked with it.

And gradually, things got better. There were other experiments that contributed some beneficial stuff but I can't recall them right now.

Coincidentally, I'd been given prednisolone in fairly med-large amounts during chemo a few years before, so not sure if this contributed to my condition or not.

I hope some of this helps, and apologies for not being able to distill this down to a more compact length ....

PS ......
RE GLANDULARS
....
The second half of my recovery started when I added desiccated liver intomy limited diet, thenbone marrow. They continue to be staples in my stabilization and improvement, even tho my diet has been able to expand from those awful, awful days. I really thought I was dying.

My energy, tho still unreliable (it has a mind of its own when it comes to how much I can expend without the piper coming round for payment) is better, as is my cognitive (most days .... again, it has a mind of its own ..... no pun intended).

I use Ancestral Supplements, New Zealand grass-fed cattle glandulars ....

Thanks very much for kindly taking the time to reply and share your tips and experiences @YippeeKi YOW !! I really appreciate it.

It sounds like you really went through a nightmare situation. I'm glad you're doing so much better now.

Can I just ask what brand and dose you take of Magnesium Glycinate if you're still taking it or what you took when you got up to the dose you settled on please?

Thank you for mentioning the other things. Regarding the Ancestral supplements New Zealand grass fed Glandular, may I ask what dose you take and when you started off taking it how much you began with please?

Also did you crush the tablets and put it into an empty capsule or put a little under your tongue or did you just swallow a small amount of the tablet directly when you were first starting off? Sorry for all the questions regarding this I'm just not sure if I'm approaching things correctly regarding this. I recently bought some empty capsules as I thought that might be a better way of getting small amounts of supplements into me...

Just one more thing I just wondered what products you buy for your dessicated liver and bone marrow and where you tend to buy your products please...

Sorry for lots of questions. I understand if it's too much to answer them all. Thanks very much again for all your help...

After much trial and unpleasant error, I settled on Solgar's Chelated Magnesium, because it was the only form I could find that came in tablet form, which allowed me to titrate my doses by snipping it in half or even in thirds using small wire clippers. Also because I know and trust the Solgar brand, and because it was only 100 mgs, which I could easily reduce to 33 or 50 mgs ....

Their recommended dose is 6 capsules, however many times a day you chose to take it. The 6 cpas are the equivalent of about 1 ounce of liver ....

I started off with 1 capsule, once a day for about a week. I have to empty the capsules into liquid because I still respond badly to gelatin caps. Ugh. I hate the taste and smell of liver, but needs must .... I've found that an organic version of V8 juice by Lakeside hides the taste pretty well. So does prune juice. Both provide a lot of added nutritional elements that I'm pretty sure I'm low low on, or was when I started this protocol.

After a week, I bumped it up to 2 caps a day, then another week and 3 caps. By that tie, I was pretty sure that as long as I emptied the contents of the caps out of their gelatin-based capsule I wasn't reacting to the contents.

If you mean the Ancestral Supplements (that's the name of the company whose product I use), I started off on it as descried above. Ditto the bone marrow from the same company, which has also helped.

For the magnesium, I started off on a large dose of 400 mgs 2x a day which did absolutely nothing. If I hadn;t been so desperate I probably would have given up on magnesium, but I persisted, and after what seemed like a couple of eons, I cae up with what, for me, was the optimum dosage amount and timing: 50 gs every 30 - 60 minutes, depending on my condition at the time. I took 50 mgs every hour or slightly less for about 9 or 10 months. Some days my intake of mag was as high as 2500 mgs a day, with no ill effects. It took about 2 to 3 weeks at that dose before I noticed a definite, undeniable improvement, tho even before that there were subtle indications that the mag dosing was doing something.
Sorry for all the questions regarding this I'm just not sure if I'm approaching things correctly regarding this.
Please, no worries !!! I was, and still am, the same. If something interests me, I want to know all about how the poster I'm responding to went about incorporating it, how much, how often, etc.
Just one more thing I just wondered what products you buy for your dessicated liver and bone marrow and where you tend to buy your products please...
I buy the Ancestral Supplements brand from Amazon, The price there is the same as it is on the company's home page, and delivery is fast and reliable. Their products, and they have a couple of dozen glandulars, are all sourced from grass-fed, New Zealand cows ..

I'm delighted to share anything that's helped me, and I hope all this input helps you. Keep in mind, that we're all different, and you might need to experiment a bit with everything from the dosage to the dosing intervals to the type of magnesium. But for me, the above was a real lifesaver.

Sending you a hug, good vibes, and the hope that this, or anything wlse that you trial, is of help to you, and please feel free to tag me with any additional questions, yes?  ....

@Kes

@YippeeKi YOW !! has made some good suggestions. But, going back to your original problem, I found that every oral steroid has allergens in it, usually milk and so I have to have mine compounded. I mentioned this since you mentioned developing more food allergies. I found taking anything pharmaceutical that has the least little bit of any corn or milk derivative, sets off my allergies, which can include all sorts of symptoms including increased fatigue.

So, I find I either have to have an injectable version, or more conveniently have it compounded. I have had to have hydrocortisone, prednisone, and dexamethasone compounded in this way.

Best wishes...
