There's a back channel from the brain to the ears, that can set the sensitivity of the sensory hairs. That's a potential target for treatment. I thought it was interesting, and that back channel might be affected by ME, resulting in hypersensitivity to sound, or tinnitus. I had tinnitus before ME, so I can't blame ME for that one.

Yep, the tinnitus I first noticed in 5th grade in the mid 1970s is likely not connected to the ME/CFS of 2005.
The laws of cause and effect,
Can't be going around breaking the law, you know.

😟 Yikes, later this year I will have had ME/CFS for 20 years,
32.25 percent of my life.

And if my 10:27pm math is right, Dad will have had it for 49.41 percent of his life.

This might be insightful, a recent article on a relationship with sleep and tinnitus, so not surprising that people with ME/CFS might be more prone to tinnitus issues. Mine has been quite bad and weird in recent years, but when I choose to do things to settle my system down it seems to improve, but gets quite triggered lately from doing the wrong things, like too much tech. Wonder whether tech frequencies are involved in making it worse as well.

For that to be discovered to be a thing would not be the least bit astonishing.

I have honestly thought this for years, but it seems to depend on sensitivity, I have relatives who were just here who spent x amount of hours a day on tech, sit in bed watching it all night and still sleep and function fine. Although I am sure it takes a gradual toll in other ways, I can see it taking a toll on the skin and aging of some people I know, which will have longer term impacts.

On the other hand my best friend was just telling me she hasn't been able to use her phone lately without getting dizzy, nausea and flushing. Whether this is the frequencies or just sensitivity to the physical action and stress response to the phone, or probably both.

Either way we have to try and adjust our lifestyles to it and or the brain activity involved, which the article highlights. I have wanted to move to the middle of nowhere and in nature to see it makes a difference, but not so easy to just go and do.

Frequencies don't cause physical effects. It's the energy of whatever is oscillating that causes effects. The frequency of the oscillation does change how the energy interacts, but the frequency doesn't cause anything; it's just a number. A megawatt of EM at 100 kHz might not warm a cup of water significantly, but at the resonant frequency of water molecules, 100 watts will boil it fairly quickly. Go past the resonant frequency, and it again might not transfer much energy to the water.

Whether EMF at a given frequency and power level has an effect on biological systems is a question that needs to be properly tested. So far, there doesn't seem to be any evidence for EMF having biological effects from daily exposure at typical power levels and frequencies (aside from visible spectrum affecting eyes or some chemical reactions such as VitD production).

I do live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by boreal forest. It didn't make any difference in my tinnitus, ME, or general health.
Everybody's tinnitus reacts differently to different stimuli. Some can drink coffee or eat refined sugars--no problem. Coffee and sugar can cause tinnitus to scream for others.

I spent a considerable amount of time on the tinnitustalk forum, and a good number of posters said EMFs affected their tinnitus. One guy was convinced his tinnitus was from his new pickup truck with all the electronic devices giving off a lot of EMFs. A friend of mine said he had to get rid of his pickup truck because the EMFs were too much to handle.

I have heard of biological organisms being affected by EMFs from radio towers, sometimes more than a mile away from the source. I think there's more that could be discovered and acknowledged about these dangers except for some very powerful interests that work diligently to keep this from happening.

There is the calcium signalling in cells disruption which I think has been around for quite a while.

I did ask AI about this recently and it did talk about increases in oxidative stress by triggering excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to impaired ATP, fatigue, brain fog and and metabolic dysfunction.

It wouldn't be hard to replicate this stuff, even in humans and studying mitochondrial and cellular function, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in doing so.

Personally I find a difference using nature and the sun to support me, rather than being inside and around tech all the time. But it does seem to matter where I am at and how sensitive I am or not in general, I have gone through periods where holding a phone to my head is too much, or even having a horrible reaction to being too close to a microwave oven. While when I am doing good it is fine.

    • This paper explains how EMFs activate voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs), leading to increased intracellular calcium levels. This process can result in oxidative stress and inflammation due to excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
  • Yakymenko, I., et al. (2015). Oxidative mechanisms of biological activity of low-intensity radiofrequency radiation. Electromagn Biol Med, 34(3), 186-202.
    • A comprehensive review showing that low-intensity RF radiation (such as from WiFi and cell towers) increases oxidative stress and DNA damage in various biological models.
  • Kesari, K. K., et al. (2011). Effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic wave exposure from cellular phones on the reproductive pattern in male Wistar rats. Appl Biochem Biotechnol, 164(4), 546-559.
    • Demonstrates how RF-EMF exposure leads to increased lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidant levels, suggesting heightened oxidative stress.

2. EMFs and Mitochondrial Dysfunction (ATP Impairment)

  • Blank, M., & Goodman, R. (2011). DNA is a fractal antenna in electromagnetic fields. Int J Radiat Biol, 87(4), 409-415.
    • Highlights how DNA itself acts as an antenna for EMFs, potentially interfering with cellular processes, including mitochondrial bioenergetics.
  • Desai, N. R., et al. (2009). Pathophysiology of cell phone radiation: oxidative stress and carcinogenesis with focus on male reproductive system. Reprod Biol Endocrinol, 7, 114.
    • Shows a link between RF-EMF exposure, mitochondrial damage, and reduced ATP production due to oxidative stress.
  • Herbert, M. R., & Sage, C. (2013). Autism and EMF? Plausibility of a pathophysiological link – Part II. Pathophysiology, 20(3), 211-234.
    • Discusses how EMFs may impair mitochondrial function by disrupting electron transport chain efficiency, leading to reduced ATP production and increased metabolic stress.

I've also heard about biological organisms being affected by Mercury being in retrograde, or for that matter, plenty of claims of people turning into wolves when the moon is full. There's a difference between claims and evidence from properly done studies.

I don't think there's a lack of interest in studying the effects of EMFs on organisms. There's simply a lack of positive findings to publish. I think there's actually a lot of interest in being the ones who find a dramatic health threat. It's too bad there's not a registry of study proposals, so we could see how many studies attempted to find something, but didn't publish because the results were negative.

Does the study show disruptions at the signal levels common in our environment? Power level does make a difference. I think there are plenty of studies which make dramatic claims, but don't make any effort to point out that the conditions of the tests were not what would be expected in everyday life.

Well that would be good to see all potentially studies done to add context. I do find it all annoying on some level, because it actually would not be hard to conduct studies with humans isolated for short/medium periods of time and exposed to different levels of EMF's then to simply examine cellular and mitochondrial function. Given the extent of this technology this does not seem much to ask.

You also say there is interest in finding negative results, I would suggest the opposite is true, that many people do not want to peruse potentially negative lines of enquiry properly for varying reasons, and who wants to fund it. This is a common pattern in medicine quite often because of how geared people are towards positive outcomes and success, or relying on past assumptions of approvals. I would even suggest this is why this kind of research appears to still not have been done properly or extensively, just the defaulting to it is fine without really knowing long term impacts.

I believe it is more common knowledge now too the positive impact of infrared light and radiant heat on the cellular function and mitochondria of some organisms, including us. I believe there are even a couple of accounts on this forum of people regaining quite significant levels of functionality utilizing this. This is also my experience in general, although the positive impacts can be minimal if I am not doing well, which seems the case for a lot of things with this condition.

It is easy to properly test EMF sensitivity. That's why I find the lack of positive findings adequate evidence that there are not positive findings to find. While there are businesses that would not be happy about positive findings, positive results from a proper study would be a major career-builder for a researcher, so there is clear motivation for such studies. I expect that many won't bother making the effort because they don't believe there are significant biological effects from everyday EMF exposure. Others might believe, and do personal experiments (easy and cheap enough to do; no need for funding) ... and find nothing worth pursuing.

Yes, biological effects depend on frequency and magnitude and duration. There are chemical reactions that can occur at a certain frequency of EMF, such as IR light, but they will not occur below that frequency regardless of magnitude or duration, because there's a fixed energy threshold. So, effects from IR light do not mean that wifi signals will have an effect.

I"m not a tinnitus expert by any stretch.

In my case, I was really careful with my hearing. So what explains alot of hearing loss, in my left ear but not right?
There is a TED talk about tinnitus arising from nerve damage, so it's considered a bit like phantom limb syndrome.

but I don't know if thats really true or still a theory.

the other day I had some really loud thing happen, which entered my left ear which can;t hear well and has more tinnitus.

I felt injured. I felt like I'd injured my brain, It was rather awful for several hours after wards. Its like SOuND was forced into my physical body I sure felt ill afterwards.

Another comment:

when my tinnitus is worse (like in PEM) (or what have you)....my feet tend to get numb much earlier in the day.

the back half of the bottom of my feet go numb.

Hi @Rufous McKinney -- I've had this problem for years, and it's gotten much worse in the past year. I just came across a post I made on a tinnitus forum about 7 years ago, and thought you might find it interesting. It's a reminder for me to get back to a therapy that gave me some relief all those years ago.

"A little over a week ago, I had a serious tinnitus spike from an acoustic trauma (packing tape, of all things). All the things I've discovered to help calm my system down were not working. So about two days later, I went in to visit my Osteopath, who is also a Cranial/Sacral Therapist. I was still quite jumpy, my brain was jutting around all over the place, and I felt a deeply uneasy trembling within my whole system.

As soon as my Osteopathy put his hands on my head, he said he could hear the alarms going off (wildly). I told him I thought the trauma was centered in my right ear, which he agreed. He began working on it, but couldn't seem to get the trauma to let go. So after about 10 minutes, he put on a vinyl glove, and went inside my mouth, just opposite my ear.

He massaged VERY gently in the area just opposite my right ear, and after just a minute or so, said something like, "it just let go, did you feel that?" Which I did, and all the jumpiness, brain jutting, and trembling instantly ceased. He then went on to describe the energetic pattern across my face, which he described as having been "blasted".

So he worked on the left side of my face for about a minute, before he made another very similar comment. Something like, "the blast just let go, did you feel that?" Which I did, but this time I felt an immediate deep relaxation and letting go in my whole upper back and shoulder area. I felt like a different person after those releases.

I felt these releases gave me some good insights into what kind of difficult energetic patterns can be set up from various types of acoustic or other traumas. And that what many might consider difficulties with psychologically dealing with some of our setbacks, may instead be difficulties re-establishing normal harmonies in the affected areas.

Though I had really good help from my Osteopath to restore some of my disrupted harmonies, I think there are a number of good things we can do for ourselves at home. Like doing epsom salts baths, castor oil packs, various modalities using essential oils, and more. But for more difficult situations, I think a really good cranial/sacral therapist can do wonders."
