Neurontin, Lyrica and generic versions gabapentin and pregabalin have been cited by FDA as being involved in breathing problems, especially in conjunction with other medications that also cause respiratory issues, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and some herbal products.

One commenter, who identified himself as a substance use professional (it’s the internet, so who knows?), warns that Neurontim, or possibly Lyrica, he didn't clarify, is an addictive drug and that it “….causes the synapses to stop working …” (sic).

I know some members here have mentioned these drugs as helping or having helped them, so thought that the apparently newly determined risks should be posted as well, but I’d take this with a grain of salt, as with all gov’t pronouncements regarding drugs and supplements. There’s always a subtext somewhere that we’re not aware of.

I've been taking Lyrica (both original and generic) for several years and could not function without it. I had taken Neurontin previously too, for pain, but Lyrica, coupled with Ultram, works better. I may not notice breathing problems, however, if any, as my condition has improved over the last two years as a result of (I know this won't be popular) graded exercise (graded by me, not my doctor)—simply walking.
