'Long colds' are a thing, like long Covid say experts

"Long colds" can be a thing in the same way that "long Covid" is, with some people experiencing prolonged symptoms after an initial infection, according to a UK study.

Common long cold symptoms included a cough, stomach pain and diarrhoea.

The findings come from 10,171 adults who completed questionnaires.

More work is needed to understand who is at risk, how bad it can be and what can be done about it, experts say.

Prof Paul Harrison, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford, said: "The study supports previous findings that long-term symptoms are common after respiratory infections in general, not just following Covid."

A persistent cough seems reasonably normal: irritated airways trigger the cough, and the cough continues the irritation, and the cycle persists until something breaks it. I can see the possibility of similar feedback issues involving the digestive system, including the microbiome. I don't see either as the type of persistent dysfunction of long-covid.

My first impression is that this is just an example of "jumping on the bandwagon". Long Covid is a popular topic, offering funds and prestige, so unethical researchers will try to present their studies as somehow being related to LC.

This is new the insidious way that BPS "researchers" are trying to grab Long Covid patients. By claiming its nothing new they can funnel them all through their existing "evidence based" treatment. I am very wary of this because while it is true that any infection (and trauma potentially) can cause the condition the second part of existing research and treatment is a lie. I hate that we have to care who this message comes from to ascertain the motives behind it but if it comes out of the UK the goal is shunt into GET/CBT.

It's terrible. I do believe that many things can trigger ME/CFS type illnesses - from COVID to EBV to various enteroviruses to vaccines or adjuvants and more. We really don't understand the illness. But these 'XXX can also cause it' are not a way to expand research, but usually a way to minimize it and push an existing BS framework like BPS.

I agree with what others are saying plus my long colds used to last 6 weeks. My ME has lasted 40+ years. Definitely not the same thing.

It sparked interest with me because I caught two respiratory infections that pushed me from mild to moderate.

At the time I was in Hong Kong, and on reflection I now wonder if maybe it was a variant of SARS?
