link between crohn's and a virus and gene mutation. Will CFIDS have the same result?

This article is interesting because it established a link between crohn's and a virus and gene mutation. Perhaps what we will see is that many diseases will have this same issue. Virus plus gene mutation equals ....

also you can find another article at

"It's been suspected that autoimmune and other diseases might be influenced by viral infections, but "this is the first really clear indication of a disease caused by a susceptibility gene and a specific virus," study co-leader Thaddeus Stappenback said in a journal news release."

I am wondering if we will find this is the same for XMRV and CFIDS. Perhaps the gene mutates and we get this disease.

Just noticed this as well, interesting read but similar to the others. http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/display/57509/

Thanks for posting this, and maybe such complex interactions will prove to underly this illness. The Dubbo studies (more from Cort) do show this pattern, where gene polymorphisms + particular infections combine to bring about this illness - albeit in one very particular form of ME. Still, Interferon-gamma gene + Epstein Barr virus = ME/CFS?

Thanks so much for posting this!

I've always felt that ME/CFIDS was a 3-part combo such as this article states. The real question, in my mind, is how many illnesses aren't a combo of a gene+a toxin+a bug!? I see great promise in subgrouping ME/CFIDS if they were to do similar research as they did here, for the purpose of treatment I mean, it would be very beneficial to know that a patient must be treated for all of the above (or at least the two not involving the gene).

I still can't figure out why more research hasn't been done with EBV and ME/CFIDS now that they've found hard connections with EBV and MS and cancers.

I think it'd be great if we could have our med files read (for instance) EBV, HHV6/ mercury/ gene (such and such) instead of going by CFS. The name will never fit and I think part of the reason it gets no respect is it doesn't fit what doctors see either, therefore, it's really useless. However, assuming a medical professional isn't a total idiot, they could potentially understand these separate components, or at least be forced to admit when they do not.

I believe this is just the start of it. We will find many diseases have these implications.

I participated in a study on auto immune diseases and how they run in families, perhaps there will be a link with that as well.

All I know is that we don't know a lot about medicine yet. For instance, I tend to hemmorhage every time I deliver a baby, or have surgery. I have been tested and tested to find out why I bleed like I do. I always thought that what they tested for was enough. Interestly, they don't understand and can't test for everything until they find out what everything is. As they are in the dark about many bleeding issues. So when they say they don't understand, I now know they don't because bleeding issues have not all been mapped out yet.

We have a long way to go....
