Improvement in ME/CFS and a high dose statin

The following is a summary of what I have learnt about my health since September 2019. I hope that this information might help others to improve their condition, although there are no guarantees. Everyone has "a unique biochemistry" according to Dr Jacob Teitelbaum. So be aware that what might work for me probably won't work for you.

Since starting treatment for an unrelated condition (minor stroke), I have continued to recover from the devasting effects of ME/CFS. For me, the recovery process hasn’t been instant and I wouldn’t expect it to be.

It is now that I truly realise how sick I really was, having struggled with crushing fatigue and immune disfunction since Christmas 1993 (diagnosed in 1994).

I currently taking the following (per day):

80mg Lipitor (atorvastatin)

50 mg pregnenolone
150 – 300 mg coenzyme Q10
** These are essential to counteract the long term side effects of the statin (Lipitor)

6 – 10 capsules of flax and/or fish oil because some people like me have greater than normal need for essential fatty acids.

It is very lucky that I was given the statin as a routine post stroke medication. In normal circumstances, I would not have had the chance to take this drug, as it is a cholesterol lowering medication and I don’t have high cholesterol. In fact, my level is on the low side of normal.

It has been found that statins may exhibit broad antiviral properties on a dose dependent basis. See: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24613180

There is very little information about the treatment approach that I am using. Dr Teitelbaum has written articles about it and I consider him the world’s leading expert on this topic.

First of all, congrats on your improving health!:)

These 2 studies might show another possible reason for your improved health on Atorvastatin -

Atorvastatin Treatment Modulates the Gut Microbiota of the Hypercholesterolemic Patients.

In conclusion, these data suggest that atorvastatin treatment of patients with hypercholesterolemia may selectively restore the relative abundance of several dominant and functionally important taxa that were disrupted in the HP.

(untreated hypercholesterolemic patients = (HP)

Alterations in Gut Microbiota by Statin Therapy and Possible Intermediate Effects on Hyperglycemia and Hyperlipidemia

From these results, the effect of statins on metabolic improvements could be explained by altered gut microbiota. Our findings suggest that the modulation of gut microbiota by statins has an important role in the therapeutic actions of these drugs.

EDIT-I have very slowly moved myself from severe to mostly mild ME/CFS by treating severe gut dysbiosis and a probable leaky gut.

Thank you

It is amazing to read that atorvastatin modulates gut microbiota. I knew that correct gut bacterial flora was important, but it looks like the probiotic that I took sometimes was targeting the wrong bacteria.

Atorvastatin is truly a wonder drug!

Good luck with your slow improvement.

I think that despite the negativity associated with ME/CFS, people can and do get better.
