I never knew salt cravings were treatable. I had read that Ashwagandha was good for stress because it reduces cortisol levels, so I thought, OK, I've had a very stressful 24 months or so (not kidding), and I thought I'd see how it made me feel. I do seem a bit calmer, but I'm much more ECSTATIC that I finally don't crave salty snacks like pretzels and potato chips any longer.
I did a Google search just to be sure I was attributing this change to the right supplement, since I do take other supplements. I Googled "herbal supplements for salt cravings" and found this page:
http://www.womentowomen.com/adrenal-health-2/eating-to-support-your-adrenal-glands-2
(This is a good article all-around on how to support your adrenals and I'm not affiliated with them in any way.)
If you scroll down to the very last paragraphs, there is a list of herbal supplements:
Here is how Ashwagandha helps with salt cravings:
"Salt cravings in adrenal insufficiency are related to low levels of a steroid hormone called aldosterone. This hormone helps the body maintain salt and water as a way to help regulate blood pressure. When cortisol goes up, aldosterone goes down. Like cortisol, aldosterone fluctuates throughout the day, and is also influenced by stress. Chronically low levels of aldosterone can impact electrolyte balance, and sodium intake is one way to help correct this imbalance."
I took 450mg of Ashwagandha root (non-standardized extract) once daily in the morning with food. The directions say take two capsules one to two time per day with water.
There is an all-inclusive non-commercial review of Ashwagandha here:

There appears to be some interaction with MAOI inhibitors, so be aware of that.
