Even for more conventional illnesses, they are generally used as a plot device rather than anything to foster understanding. I can't count how many characters 'in a wheelchair' (not even 'characters who use a wheelchair') who 'get up and walk miraculously!'. Generally shown that they were imagining being paralysed, or that it can always miraculously clear up so no big deal! And once they've stood up once that's it, no variation, no worsening with time, they're just fine again.

Or people waking up in a hospital bed somewhere, ripping the IV out of their arm and running off down the hall. No headache or balance problems, not weakened from being unconscious, not even thirsty or hungry.

Its pretty ridiculous.
