Has anyone made digestive improvements with substances administered non-orally?

This questions comes out of sheer curiosity. We conventionally input substances through our digestive tract, orally. But there are other ways to input content into our bloodstream: buccally (mouth), sublingually (under the tongue), transdermally (skin), rectally, injecting, and even inhaling.

I just wonder whether and how these other methods can affect the gut, or other parts of the body. Most of the supplements recommended for gut health have to be eaten. But some people are less gifted in the department of absorptive capacity via digestion.

My question is: does anyone have any stories about improvements to their gut while inputting a substance (that might improve the gut) via a non-oral route? Or other relevant stories of administering something via one method and seeing improvements in other parts of the system?

In fact I'd love to hear any stories about health improvements via non-oral administration, especially if you opted for that route because oral methods weren't a great option because you don't have the best digestive capacity. I'm more interested in natural non-pharmaceutical substances, but feel free to share other experiences.

Yes, I have done MUCH transdermal usage of supplements.

Unfortunately due to crashing from an internal supplement I no longer can do these for now but last year I raised my B from 400 to 1000 just by 4 drops on my stomach daily and did get my D up with just drops on belly button. I have soaked my feet in teas, etc. You would be surprised how much your skin can get through! Kinda of eerie to think about given the lotions nailpolish etc. I put on my skin for years.

Lots of GI issues here as well so its a must for me. Its VERY possible :)

Thanks for sharing. I understand that your numbers went up for B & D. Did you see/feel any health improvements?

oh yes most definitely I did.

But then I increased what I thought was a gentle internal supplement which caused a lot of detox and further impaired my methylation system....so its been difficult not being on those still. They were really helping me quite a bit.

Live and learn.

Best wishes.

Ps. I have done rectal suppositories of things in coconut oil, etc. and although it absorbs easier I have still had brain reactions to some of them just like I would orally, so depends what your main concerns are. Under the tongue is a WONDERFUL way if you can tolerate it, even in the nose for some things (not all).

I have complicated GI dysfunction that includes severe idiopathic gastroparesis and one of the research pathology findings in gastroparesis is that there is a deficiency in nitric oxide synthase (as there is in a number of other chronic disorders).
I have also been diagnosed with having an ischemic bowel too and was prescribed a nitrate med for this. A flow on from this med was that I was able to stop tube feeding (to bypass the stomach because of having gastroparesis) and have (carefully selected) foods orally again.
A nitrate patch did work for me in this regard too, but only up until I developed a sensitivity problem to glycerin, something which is incorporated in the gel in the nitrate patches, so I just have an oral nitrate (which is one of few meds I tolerate well).
I can't put anything on my skin with an oil in it now though as any oils give me abdominal pain within 1 - 2 hours of applying it.
