Not directly ME related, but a study on how strokes alter the gut microbiome, which in turn alters the brain's immune response. That's the kind of feedback loop I've thought is involved with ME. I've had several experiences where my gut microbiome has had a significant effect on my ME severity, both negative and positive. I don't think that feedback loop is the root cause of ME, but I do think it affects severity on a very individual basis. This sort of feedback loop with factors that vary with the individuals could help explain the variation in severity of symptoms and sensitivities.
